Syritta pipiens - a closer look

It's english name is the rather uninspiring "thick-legged hoverfly". The enlarged femora (thighs) are visible in the images.

Thought i'd share these as these common but overlooked hoverflies are just 7mm long and appear very dark to the naked eye but they're quite photogenic when you do get one sharp.

After posting this image i went back the next day and shot some more. They like apple mint.

All handheld 60mm macro.

Lovely sharp shots. The flying ones are brilliant, at such low shutter speeds too, well done.

Magic shots! We have a large amount of Apple Mint outside our back door and all summer it humms all day.

Thanks for the comments *chr. Very nice.

In the few days since i took those shots the apple mint has all but finished and the little things are moving on. :(
