Sounds like a bargain, Simon :)

One thing I have noticed with a few 90-250s is the screws coming loose in the tripod mount foot - easily tightened though.

Did you get a UV filter and case with it?

Ian

Hi Ian,

I agree, whilst it is a lot of money it is also a 'lot of lens' for that money and you get a 12 month warranty with Harrison Cameras which is great so I am very happy.

I will keep an eye on the foot screws, perhaps a few drops of "thread lock" will be a sensible precaution.

No case or UV filter, however I believe that the front element is actually a built-in 'protection' filter. I may or may not be correct on that but believe I was read somewhere that it was. Either way the hood is so deep the front element is well protected.

One other thing, I am very happy with the focus speed of my regular 4/3 lenses when used with the em-1. This 90-250 focuses very quickly most of the time , it was hopeless on the em-5. I tried the 35-100 with the EC20 yesterday, just to see if I could go without the 50-200 SWD, again very impressed especially as I had the EC20 attached. In fact so much so that I really see no need to keep the 50-200 SWD now other than for the lighter weight, thus I may put it up for sale soon and concentrate on using the SHG lenses.

Regards, Simon

The front element of the 90-250 is a "real" element, not protective plain glass. If you buy the lens new you get a plain glass 105mm filter - which fits nicely into a pocket on the case that you also don't have :)

I must admit that while it is a lovely lens, I only use when the light is really bad. The 50-200 with EC-14 is so much more manageable as long as there is enough light, and quality is excellent with either.

Ciao ... John

You are quite right John, I have just checked and the front element is indeed an optical one. The hood is as you know very deep and will protect it, if however I at some point choose to photograph rally cars or similar I will invest in a 105mm filter. Of course a nice S/H one may appear for sale and that would do nicely too.

You spotted my error Simon - the filter is indeed 105mm. I've edited my original post just in case someone spotted it and went and ordered the wrong size.

Sorry for any confusion ... John

I think someone make (or used to) a replacement foot that was Arca Swiss clamp compatible. There used to be one for the OM 350mm also but I've never tracked one down.

Hi there Simon!

I'm very jealous of your bag of goodies, however I don't know if I'd dare leave the house with that value of camera gear on my back!

Have fun with the 90-250 and don't forget to post some more images!

Cheers,

Ralph.

That's them, it could have been the same company that made one for the OM 350mm.

Yes about 1.32 a litre at the moment with talk of a 2 pence rise.

Hi Ralph,

Don't be jealous, remember it's the 'talent' and not the kit that captures a great image *yes

I don't alude to being a great photographer just one who likes the 'fine things in life' . It's quite possible you're images are better than mine ;)

No matter how much value you have in your kit never be afraid to leave the house, otherwise you will not get the fullest enjoyment from it, this is where insurance comes into play. But I do know what you mean, I once owned a 39mp Hasselblad H3D II along with five lenses for it, all in a rucksack on my back and worth more than some new BMW cars for example. That's when you start to worry and consider whether you have lost the plot

A year after getting it I sold it back to Hasselblad in London, yep I lost some serious money but nothing like I would have if I still had it now. I'm not a "Pro" so it wasn't 'earning its keep' and I came to my senses thank God, a valuable lesson learned there;)

I'm looking forward to getting the opportunity to really use the 90-250 and indeed I shall post further images taken with it as and when I get chance too, also from the other SHG lenses too. One thing I plan to do at sometime in the 'near' future is produce a blog about my love affair with Olympus and share my experiences and images taken with these superb optics.

Kind regards, Simon

:D:D Brilliant Ed, quite right too.

Just think how much of our hard earned cash we spend on the damn stuff each year
