External power EM-1 and EM-5

I know Olympus sell the AC-3 but an AC-1 works
http://www.exprodirect.com/ex-pro-ol...y-adapter.html
It has that funny connector that you cannot seem to get anywhere else

...and if you combine it with one of these...

I have powered an EM-5 with no batteries with this set up

How...it works out in practice... I'll see at the next gig...

I am probably being a bit thick Chris, but how would you connect the battery pack to the camera?

Re: External power EM-1 and EM-5

That requires the bodge ... you have to cut the cable with the connector and similarly the USB out cable from the battery

Re: External power EM-1 and EM-5

I'd have a slight concern about the power rating. Both AC-1 and AC-3 are 9V but the ExPro AC-1 is only rated for 1.7A while the AC-3 can deliver 3A... the Olympus site doesn't specify the current from the genuine AC-1.

With those ratings, it begs the question as to whether the AC-1 can provide enough power under all operating conditions.

I have a new boxed Ac-1 here and it says DC9V-2.5A. Not sure what they are worth i know i paid a fortune for it!! and never got round to using it, but would be up for a sale if anyone interested

They are expensive in the UK. The AC-3 is about 100, but "only" $79 in the US.

Well I have used the external battery for a few gigs. It works. The battery sits comfortably in a left hand pocket.

Chris,

Could you post images of the set up please - sounds interesting.

The ExPro AC-1 was the only way I could get the connector for the Olympus

It is something Olympus could consider, external battery power

Am I reading that correctly, that the AC-1 for earlier DSLRs, would work OK on the OM1 EM5 mk2 with power grip? And that would enable a much cheaper Oly AC-1/third party version to be used in lieu of a far more expensive Oly AC-3 where no cheap third party versions are available.

Bump.

Anybody know the answer?

The 1.7A version of the AC-1 will not deliver enough current for the E-M5. The latest EXPRO AC-1 is rated at 2.5A and is close enough to the 3A rating of the official Olympus AC-3. The AC-5 is a 5A rating I believe.
