Pen F hi res mode test.

Warning: Miserable old bag.

Here's my test subject, my NatGeo bag. This is shot with the Pen F, the 45mm at f4.5 and 200 ISO using Hi res mode raw with a 4 second delay. I pulled every trick I know to get a nice sharp image.

I also took the same picture in normal resolution mode using raw. I processed both using the Adobe DNG converter. I applied the same degree of sharpening in Elements to each... Now the problem is that one image has twice the magnification of the other.

So, in this case I down sampled the 80Mp image to 20 Mp (by reducing X and Y size by 50%) and compared it to the usual resolution image.

The native Pen 20Mp raw is on the left, the down sampled 80Mp is on the right.

There may be some slight advantage to making a hi res image then reducing it. I suspect the noise might be lower for instance, and you might be able to add more sharpening as well.

And in this case I upsampled the 20Mp image to 80Mp by doubling the X and Y size.

Now the difference is obvious. If you really want those huge prints, and your subject stays perfectly still - and you have a serious tripod... then the PEN hi resolution mode gets you better results.

Pete

PS. No miserable old bags were harmed during these experiments.

PPS. Ooh look. I have been on this forum for ten years now. (!)

I've found that hi res raws need a lot more sharpening than regular raws. Worth playing around with sharpening settings I think.

Oh yes. This poor old pensioner has just embarked on his first design with extensive use of 0201 components and signals in the 5Gb/s region.

Good thing I enjoy my worh :)

Real-time Hi-Res for imaging SMT would be beneficial, would it not.

Hah! Tell me about it. We pay someone to pay someone else to fiddle with those things just so we don't have to. I did buy an old Vickers stereo microscope for work which was an awesome purchase, and well worth the money.
