Camera club speakers

I, like some on here, belong to a camera club. At a committee meeting someone asked,"could we have some big name photographers to speak at the club".
Anyone know of such a species? We use the PAGB book but I wonder if anyone on here could recommend good speakers. Within traveling distance of Hadleigh in Essex.

We have had some ‘big’ names. As you would expect, they range from poor to very good. Before booking I would check individual performance with other clubs if possible. Reaction within the club has ranged from unanimous approval or disapproval to some thinking a speaker was brilliant while others wanted to leave before the end, me included.

On balance, I’d avoid.

Damien Demolder. Lives local to you and is very good.

Damien McGillicuddy If he is doing any tours down this way

Try asking Mark Thakara of Olympus. He is back in the UK at Southend

Or if you are really stuck, I do a great presentation on the Essex Wildlife Trust...

I'm no longer a member of a club, but for a few years in the late 200x era I was a member of the St Neots Camera Club. There were some terrible speakers there, including one woman who had been trying for years to get ARPS and decided to inflict on us her various failed portfolios which consisted mainly of very heavily modified versions of MF transparencies she'd taken in Africa. I'd never been so grateful for a tea break - and I don't drink tea!

I can ask a friend who is a member of the Clacton On Sea Camera Club, if they have had any guest speakers who could possibly fit the bill?

Yes please.

Big name speakers are likely to be expensive. And of course being a good photographer may not mean you are also a good presenter. Our club has occasionally had an evening playing a DVD of a big name speaker. Not as good of course; less bespoke and not responsive to the audience and no possibility for Q&A. We have also had some excellent and fascinating illustrated talks from fine local photographers who are not big names, some of whom would never win PAGB-style competitions but have a lot to enjoy, challenge and inspire.

Sorry I can't make specific suggestions for your locality.

Russell Savory is very good and local too. You'll have seen some of his films on the BBC.

I can PM his email address if you want it.

Here you are Dave. Contact details and price etc are on the flyer. I am informed, you don't have to be a Clacton Club member to go to the presentation in March. I hope this helps.

Up here in Lincoln we have had talks (free) from Fotospeed speakers.

Might be worth a try.

I cannot suggest any names other than the obvious, but as an observation; those who teach and run hands-on workshops also tend to be very good and engaging speakers. They also have the added incentive that if their presentation is good they may well get business from members wanting a day's tuition.

I can thoroughly recommend Sarah Kelman’s new talk on peri-Arctic wildlife. A bit of a SuperWoman, she’s a member of our club (Cambridge) and manages to fit in motherhood and part-time work as an airline pilot. She’s also very pleasant and I very much enjoyed her talk.

For example https://www.cambridgeindependent.co....dlife-9053220/

I can’t find a website or instagram account and I suspect she tries to keep a bit below the radar: I do know her email address, but if anyone would like to discuss a talk with her please PM me and I’ll ask her if I can pass it on.

Why not ask Ian Burley? Owner of this forum and a Olympus fanboy. Think he can talk of the uniqueness of Oly. :D
