What's the macro like on the 12-50?

I've taken the plunge and ordered an E-M5 and am starting to offload some of my 4/3 gear. I was wondering what the macro was like on the 12-50 kit lens? If it's half decent I'll be selling my beloved 50mm F2.

The impression I get from pictures I've seen on the web is that it's more than half decent for macro/close ups, in fact it could be said that it performs at its best in macro mode. However, it's highly unlikely that it will rival the 50mm f2 for ultimate quality, that would be asking a loit of most prime macros let alone a kit zoom.

As you may gather I sold my E600, E620 and 50mm f2 recently to fund an E-M5 and 45mm. The 45mm looks very nearly as good (optically) as the 50mm (if you check out the slrgear website lens tests).

However the 45mm has no macro capability, so I am pinning my hopes on proper extension tubes with electronics being introduced eventually.

I wouldn't go selling my present stuff (at this point), but I would like to see some macro (or close up) photos with this lens as it is convenient to have macro included in this Jack of all trades lens. BTW, what is the maximum magnification possible with the 12-50mm lens?
Actually, I just looked it up & when Maximum Image Magnification: 0.36x, it isn't really macro at all, but just close up use only.

Thanks for the replies. I know that I'm going to have to make some sacrifices here, but I only ever use the 50mm as either a lightweight walkaround or for macro. It is an absolutely brilliant macro lens, and it's better than I am *yes. So alll in all, since I don't really specialise in macro stuff, I'm prepared to drop quality a bit. I was just trying to get an idea of how much. I may wait and see how I get on with the E-M5 first.

I might be interested in the 50mm if you decide to part with it John. All dependant on the better half of course:)

Here's a close-up of my (only) 20 note, using the "macro" function of the 12-50mm lens on my E-M5. 1/100, f8, ISO 2000

Cheers Stephen, but there's a recession on. Can you do one of a fiver so I can compare to the original?

:):)

Sorry John, can't afford a fiver after splashing out on the camera :(
Will this do?

Taken at F6, with the lens set to macro, which has fixed focal length of 43mm in this mode.
Straight out of camera at about the closest auto focus, with the little square centred on the join of the coins, level with REG, and re-sized in Faststone.

Extension tubes are on their way, albeit at a price.

I've not seen any advertised in the UK yet though. There's always the Achromatic close up lens option.

Go on Stephen show us all of it, this may be my only chance to see one!

Oh gawd, I really don't know :confused::confused:. I don't like the idea of fixed F6. But I could really use the money.

I think I'll need to try it out before I decide.

Thanks for supplying the images.

Robin Wongs site contains lots of examples of closeups with the 12-50mm.

I think I will need something to macro-ise this 45mm...
Is the Kenco price 216+ Euro ??

And do you get a nice cup of coffee?

Sorry John, badly worded on my part, Fixed focal length at 43mm, this photo was at F6, which is the widest aperture for "Macro"

Well that's it then, what with Mr Wong as well I'm afraid the 50mm's got to go. Gregles has first dibs.
