Lets see how this works out

Today I am going to put an E-3 against an OMD EM5 to see how time has moved on and can we still get away with using the older 4/3 sensor. Lenses are abundant as are accessories so its not "outdated" by design, only by technology. Lets see. :)

Unless you are shooting at high ISO I suspect we will not see as much of a difference as we would like to think. :)

I agree, looking at some of my older photos with the E3 and E5 there is absolutely nothing wrong with them, plenty of detail and resolution.

I think you may find that
  1. The dynamic range of the E-M5 is noticably better (much fewer blown out skies when the light is tricky :) )
  2. E-3 images (from RAW files) need a stronger degree of sharpening when doing PP because the anti-moire filter gives rise to softer unprocessed images
  3. You will feel much more weary after carrying an E-3 for a full day!

Re: Lets see how this works out

I dont mind weary, I have huge hands and need a 6.4" smartphone so an EM5 is not easy to use. Lets see the results. Everyone is making good and useful comments. ISO will be tested from base to max and results will be posted :)

Tests will be with 12-60 SWD 2.8-4 ZD (and MMF-1) as applicable

Creates a level playing field with no excuse for poor resolution! *chr

Results are in- images will be posted in pairs.

Test control conditions are 1/60 with F7.1 on the same Zuiko 12-60mm 2.8-4 SWD (A notoriously sharp lens of which I own two). MMF-1 used for OM-D. All shots on a tripod with IS switched off and 0EV exposure comp and 0EV flash comp. FL36-R used on camera bounced off flat white ceiling. Gradation set to normal and all other paramaters set at default (Image mode, JPG, L(f), 4:3 etc etc)

This is an ISO and body/flash exposure accuracy test. The E-3 consistently exposed better than the OMD. ISO range tested is 320-640-1000-1600-2500-3200 (and for the OMD we went to 6400 and 25600 as well.) All images are not resized and SOOC

First up is ISO 320.

ISO 320. The first (and brighter) pic is always the E-3 in this test.

OMD result at ISO 25600 (Messy but not worse than the E-3 would be at 6400)

Exposure aside, to my (old) eyes the E-M5 result looks significantly sharper and more detailed, especially in some of the lettering on the greetings card. I guess this would be as expected. Interesting that there seems to be such a difference in exposure though if both cameras were set to the same manual exposure. I never used an E-3 or E-5 but I did notice a similar improvement in detail when I moved from an E-620 to an E-M5. I look forward to seeing more of your tests :).

Re: Lets see how this works out

Both cameras were completely manually exposed at 1/60 and F7.1 at the same ISO speed. Where the difference came from is unusal. Perhaps the cameras flash exposure control calclulations are better in the E-3 as flash was on TTL auto.

The EM5 is significantly sharper. The games console has Windows CE written on it and even at low ISO the EM5 has a noticeable advantage. This may be the anti-moire filter in the E3 as someone pointed out. Both cameras were focused on the TEACHER writing btw.

Re: Lets see how this works out

Interesting. I have often noticed that flash photos with TTL Auto come out "under-exposed" with the E-M1/E-M5. I wonder if this is a feature deliberately added to try and reduce highlight burnout. Given that I wouldn't normally be using high ISO and flash together, it's never been a problem adjusting it in post to look natural.

Re: Lets see how this works out

Agreed. Also- another observation of Zuiko's is that the image noise difference would start to show at higher ISO's- I agreed with him. Turns out the difference is visible from 640 and up!
