Barn Swallow - first shots of the year

We went out to one of our local country parks for a stroll this morning (despite the threatening skies) and were rewarded with a sight of the first Barn Swallow seen this year.

Unfortunately the light was not good and I couldn't get a decent position for top quality shots but I just had to record something to celebrate the sighting

What do you think?

You make them sound like mediocre shots, Brian! If they are, I can't wait to see one taken in a good position in decent light. :p

Tell you what, let's see one in flight! :D

BTW if I'd taken these I'd be on my third triumphant lap of honour by now. *chr

I do reckon they are mediocre to be honest John, they lack sharp detail and the lighting is too contrasty.

I'll try to show you what I mean if I get the chance to do it "properly"

As for a flight shot, as the sign in my office used to say "The difficult we will have done by tomorrow, the impossible may take a few days longer" :D

Thanks for taking the time to look and comment

I agree with John but your reply means I do not have to duck the bar is so high!

Just for you John, here's my minimum standard target for the Barn Swallow flight shot (its about 4 years old and was shot using my 5Dmk2 and 70-300LIS)

Like I said, it may be some time ;)

Just checked my bird book and their image is not a patch on that first one :):):):)

The swallows are back here as well, but I have never taken any shot as good as the ones you show here. My only swallows in flight pictures are of a tiny bird in the far distance. When they do stop (normally on telephone lines near us), they always seem to be backlit.

It looks like summer has arrived (or is that tempting fate?).

We have House Martins just arrived Andrew and, as you say, they like a bit of a back-light too (difficult things birds ;) )

Exceptional, Brian. The first could almost be Royal Dalton.

Brian,

Some quick feedback: I think the first one is quite good; sharp, colors are vivid, focus is right, background is clean, eye contact. However I think it would benefit from not being excessively cropped (and then over-sharpened to compensate the lack of detail?).

Can you upload the un-cropped picture? Did you shoot in RAW?

Cheers
Tord

thanks Tord, input is always welcome (particularly from an expert :) )

The image I put up was from the JPG file, here is the original,

and I redid it from the RAW file using LR5.3 , here is the crop, shadows lifted a bit, Clarity dropped (I suspect I may have over-done the clarity slider in my first attempt, trying to balance light and shade), a bit of sharpness

Yes, that's much better. More detail in the texture and the glossy almost metallic blue looks more natural.

It was that Clarity slider wot dun it (with a little help from me ;) )

Thanks again Tord, a second eye is always helpful
