Grey Imports

HI,
New to the forum, just wondered what people though about the risks buying 'grey imports'? I assume it's the same as buying a camera from a different region while one holiday?

Thanks
Carl

Limited warranty seems to be the main risk I think.

@RobEW Yes, but mentally put to one side the money saved to pay for repair. Chances are you will end up quids in.

I asked a London dealer to match the online price of a grey import and they said no. He then went on about no warrantee, etc., etc..

How reliable are these cameras, I asked. They are exceptionally "Tough" and very reliable.

So why do I need a warrantee? In case it goes wrong...

We can also sell you an extended warrantee.

Do Olympus (UK/Europe) still offer a 2 year guarantee? I'm sure that I read a few months ago that it had gone down to one year - so buying from a grey importer makes you no worse off if they throw in their own guarantee. Don't forget that with an EU sale (all EU or just UK?) you can register your equipment on MyOlympus for an additional 6 months.

I bought my EM-1 (mk 1) from Panamoz and saved myself around 500. It came with a 2 year return to base (Hong Kong) warranty.

The camera developed the known sticky dial problem after about 18 months. Panamoz suggested I just send it in to Olympus Europe. I sent it in to get it fixed. Olympus upgraded my account to Pro and extended the warranty out by another 6 months (and I got a free lens cloth).

Re: Grey Imports

I always imagined the warranty issue with grey imports was just a manufacturers way of stopping people buying a camera cheaper in a different country, after all, I imagine the cameras usually all come out of the same factory in China (or wherever). Many years ago if you bought a 'premium' product you got a worldwide warranty. What happens if your pride and joy breaks down on holiday?

I buy from HDEW Cameras which supply US imports. HDEW supply their own 3 year warranty and I used it once when a new camera needed it's sensor cleaning - superb, fast and efficient service. Grey imports are now my first choice.

Ah... One learns something new every day! Do Olympus have fixed price repairs or does it vary? I only ask as I am after a s/h E-M1 but could be concerned if any repair would cost more than the camera? I have read that there are a couple of common 'issues" :-)

HDEW have an ex demo EM1 MK II for 1279 - good buy for someone, possibly, not for me I prefer film.

John

Bit of an impulse decision (funds will available next week); wanted one for ages and the old 300mm f/2.8 was always way out of my budget. Looks like the Lensmaster Gimbal (from another post here) will be an obligatory companion ;)

There is a price list for Olympus cameras. https://www.olympus.co.uk/site/media...ist_GBP_UK.pdf

A lot of the higher end bodies and lenses are ESTIMATE which is pretty opaque. I imagine there are a variety of components that might need to be replaced so the labour and parts vary widely.
Being a cynic I imagine the lower end fixed prices relate to the manufacturing cost of a total replacement ;)

If you're seriously concerned then I would look at a retailer who offer a warranty on their used goods.
For example WEX will offer you 12 months on used equipment, excluding misuse and wear and tear but they don't have an EM-1 listed today.
