Olympus 8mm Bodycap vs Samyang 7.5mm - thoughts?

I occasionally think it might be fun to have a fisheye lens - not a rectilinear UWA but specifically for the effect.
I keep eyeing up the Samyang 7.5mm when they pop up for around 150 used but I'm wondering if the Olympus body cap 8mm would actually make more sense?
The main reason being it's super compact size means I wouldn't have to displace anything in my bag to have it with me. I could just pop it in the front pocket.

Anyone used both, have examples from either or have reasons why the extra cost and (small) increase in size is worth it for the Samyang?

TIA *chr

If you just want the 'effect', one of the front-of-lens attachments will do the job quite cheaply. The lenses you mention are full-frame fisheyes and won't give a full circular image. I use a Meike 6.5mm, which is a circular fish-eye and has an f/2 maximum aperture, which is useful indoors. I've written more about it in this thread

It's a full frame fisheye effect I'm tempted by. I like the circular effect of your Meike but I know I'd use that even less frequently.

I had looked at the Olympus convertor but it won't fit on the 14-42mm Pancake zoom or 17mm f1.8 I use

I read the thread you linked to, thanks

The Samyang is widely regarded as giving outstanding results, and has a much faster aperture than the Olympus bodycap lens. It's manual focus, but with its short focal length that's almost irrelevant if you set it at f5.6 and focus it at the hyperfocal length to make everything from a few yards to infinity in focus. I use mine mainly for landscapes/seascapes and love the effects it gives. If you are careful to place the horizon across the centre of the image, then you can avoid the curved horizon effect too.

It hardly takes up any space in my camera bag.... and I've got one for sale in the 'For Sale section at http://e-group.uk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=47362 !

Re: Olympus 8mm Bodycap vs Samyang 7.5mm - thoughts?

Thanks, they're both manual focus but as you say the Samyang has aperture adjustment and looks to be the better tool alround.
It's more money though - the body cap goes for about 65 used and Samyang double that.

I know it's not a large lens, the very 1st world "problem" I have is my Streetcase L is full :o
EM10 Mkii, 14-42mm Pancake, 17mm f1,8, 25mm f1.7, 45mm f1.8 and 40-150mm f4-5.6.
If I want to add another lens I have to change bag or leave one behind. The body cap would just tuck in to the front.

The comparison is not helped by the fact that you can easily find Samyang examples on Flickr but because the body cap is mechanical there are no EXIF tracks to be found by search.

All of this is tempered by a nagging thought that I might use it twice and then never again!

I had been looking at your ad but I was hoping to part fund it with my 17mm f2.8 which I have for sale but no-one is biting.

Night and Day, Chalk and Cheese, Apples and Bananas. The 8mm bodycap is a cr@p piece of plastic not much better than a lenscap with a hole in it, whilst the 7.5mm is a nice lens! If you buy the Samyang used and don't like it I can guarantee that you will be able to sell it at almost no financial loss.

Couldn't have put it better, go for the Samyang it's a fantastic little lens.

The Samyang doesn't appear on my EXIF data either... it just shows a 0mm lens! And sorry bit I can't help you with the 17mm f2.8 as I have Pana Leica 15mm f1.7 that I love :)

Sure. If you search on terms related to the bodycap you get about 40 images. Search on the samyang 7.5 and you get hundreds.

In my heart I know one is going to be much better. I was hoping to be persuaded otherwise. I guess I need to shift that 17mm and then decide if I want a new bag too ;)

Also bodycap has 140 angle of view , Samyang has 180. That makes quite a difference in use.

I'll go right back to your "might be fun" line. For that, the 'lens cap' 8mm will do the job and not burden you down in any way. It's a bit expensive for what it is but it's not a plastic toy - it is a real glass lens.

A good point - I sort of knew that but hadn't factored it in.

Yup - I'm sure it could be fun - I'm undecided if it would be 60-80 of fun or if it would actually be 60-80 of buyers remorse

If it helps, I just got the 9mm body cap and did a test against the 7-14mm Panasonic.

http://e-group.uk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=47447

I rate the body cap as reasonable. It makes better results than the 15mm body cap I once had. I figured 60 to try the fisheye experience was a better bet than 250 for a Samyang. If I actually use it then I might trade up eventually.

Re: Olympus 8mm Bodycap vs Samyang 7.5mm - thoughts?

Read a few reviews that suggested the Body Cap is a bit more of a lens than a toy.

I know Robin Wong could take a good photo with an etchasketch but he was reasonably complimentary.
https://robinwong.blogspot.co.uk/201...ns-review.html

I also found a couple of Flickr groups
https://www.flickr.com/groups/2571568@N22/
https://www.flickr.com/groups/2657674@N23/

So MPB had one in mint condition for a very attractive price so I've bitten the bullet. I'll find out if that was a mistake next week - thanks for your thoughts.
If I really like it maybe I'll look at getting the "proper lens" at some point.

Re: Olympus 8mm Bodycap vs Samyang 7.5mm - thoughts?

I've just shot a handful to test it.
For the tiny size and the tiny price it's a bit of a laugh.

Hard to get your head around what a field of view of 140 degrees or so really means until it's on the camera.

Focus Peaking and Olympus stabilisation for the indoor shots are very handy.

Shooting straight into the sun was not the best idea. Other shots show a lot of purple fringing that Lightroom doesn't seem able to fully tame.

Stop it, I'm going on a long haul holiday so I can't afford it ;) :p :D

I might come back looking at the Samyang if I find this to be more than a gimmick on the trip but at the moment I can't justify 3x the price.

I think you have proven very firmly that this tiny lens is NOT a plastic toy. My son keeps one permanently on his camera, as a cap that can also capture a grab shot at any time and get a result, before thinking about which lens to use next.

The low level of flare with the sun right in the frame is pretty remarkable and I like your interior shots very much. A good strong foreground is always a good idea with any super-wide lens.

I hope you have plenty of fun with it *chr
