Editing posts and for sale section

It would be useful to be able to edit older posts.

It seems this forum is set so that you cannot edit a post after one or two days. Yet, especially for the gear sale section, it would be great to come back to a post for two things:

- modify the original sale ad (price, added kit...)
- modify the title to add "SOLD" at the end once the gear has sold (so we don't have to read individual ad one by one only to find it's no longer for sale).

I'll second /third that as I've never understood the need for a time limit on editing posts particularly in the For Sale section.

Does simply adding a new post in the thread with any updates or 'closure' not work then...?

If you amend an existing post, you risk losing track of original price and information etc. I think the current system works pretty well.

Re: Editing posts and for sale section

All threads in the For Sale or WAnted section should be deleted if the thread title is not a concise description

eg
For Sale
is not a valid title

it should detail the main item or items that is on offer - eg
E3
or 50-200mm lens with cracked front element
are valid titles

Re: Editing posts and for sale section

The only reason a post should be edited is to correct an error. That is why there is a time limit (24 hours off the top of my head) for editing your own posts.

Confusion will set in if you change your post days later, especially if the post has been responded to and even quoted in responses and replies.

And we want to avoid the rare situation where an unscrupulous person changes an original post for his or her own advantage - to the disadvantage of others.

If there is an update in the thread, simply add to the thread as a new post.

Ian

PS I agree that thread titles should be as accurately descriptive as possible, if only for the fact that you will get more response from interested parties!

I have added some thread prefix options for the small ads board, see:
