Exporting settings to external file

Is it possible to export the changes I've made to the default settings of an em1 mkii to an external document?

When I first got my camera, I experimented with all kinds of things, and I like the way it is set up now. I've seen some of the spreadsheets that others have created, and I *really* should have been better organized when I was experimenting and maybe made some notes in one of them.

I know I can save settings and import them back into the camera on a firmware update. I also know I can look at the EXIF or individual pictures and know what some of the settings were. But what I'd like to so is Settings-->Export and have some kind of file (text or otherwise) that I could see what changes I've made.

Any ideas? Or should I just be grateful it's working as I intended?

Thanks.

Hello, and welcome to the Forum!

You can “export” the file from the SD card to a computer. However it’s not a file that you can read, like a text file. I have not yet discovered any applications that can decipher the file.

Thanks. Nice to find a relatively active group.

Where do I find that in the settings? (To write them to the SD card?)

Welcome to the forum from me too. That's a great first question, I'd love to hear the answers as well. I was aware you could save your settings and stop them resetting during firmware updates but not that they could be saved as a specific file to use anytime I messed up my settings.

The settings are not stored on the SD card, this is a misunderstanding.

The Olympus Digital Updater program can save and restore settings at any time. It does it automatically when you do a firmware update, but you can do it manually at any time. They travel between the memory in the camera and files on your computer. Run the updater program (latest version) and try it yourself. It is all on the menus.

Yeah - I googled that and figured it out after I wrote that comment. I am now the proud owner of a .SET file that I can't read. But it is out of the camera, and I can do some more research.

I reached out to Olympus, and their answer is:

"The .set file is an Olympus proprietary file format. There are no programs available to decode the .set file."

Doesn't mean it can't be done, but obviously there isn't an easy solution. Pleased they actually answered my question, though. I guess.

I looked at the file when they first came out, using a hex/decimal editor and there is a couple of things at the start that can be “interpreted”, but it soon becomes just bulk data. No way of knowing the format, so indecipherable.

If you've updated your E-M1 MkII at some point, you can find the saved settings files from updates etc in:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\OLYMPUS\CameraSe ttings\Auto

on a Windows system.

It would be a long and tedious exercise, but someone keen to understand the file could change single settings in sequence and see what changes in the file.

It would be nice for Olympus to include a reader/editor in their software suite, so you could see what you've got and copy edit the settings for download into the camera.

I'd have thought the pros using the EM1X would have asked for that!

It would not take a lot to add this to the tethered control system, as you can already adjust most settings remotely. A text file of the current status of the camera associated with the.set file seems like a good place to start.
