Never have I ever

Itís a bit of a silly game, that often needs alcohol, but it got me thinking.

Our cameras have so much capability, what is it that simply doesnít get used?

So here goes:

Never have I ever, used the in camera double exposure!

I didn't even know you could make a double exposure on a digital camera.

I rarely use anything that isn't found on my film cameras. Auto-focusing is useful but I tend to focus manually anyway when I suppose focus peaking comes in handy.

The 'so called IS' is handy too but then everyone knows about that from the News. The built in spirit level is also handy although I don't really trust it.

Other than that I cannot think of much else that I use apart from auto-ISO and auto-bracketing, but some film cameras had that too.

You are not alone. I have never even thought about using double exposure.

Guess what I will be trying out tomorrow.

Given the ease with which you can create 'double exposures' in Photoshop I don't know whether I would want to risk doing it in camera.

Art filters, JPEG editing - leave it all for post-processing

Re-programming of function buttons. I tried it, but didn't remember that I'd done so, and what I'd programmed them for.

Back button focussing. I tried it but then went back to shutter button half-press.

Lots of other stuff!

Well reminded Jim. I had programmed the x2DC onto Fn2 and had forgotten to reprogram it after the recent firmware update. *chr*chr

Jim

The only function button I use is for Depth of Field preview but I can never remember (or trust) the others. I like to keep things simple. :)

Never used video mode, never will. That button always gets reassigned to something more useful.

Another non video user. Never used the different things to different cards set up.

Things I've never used (except maybe to play with once and then forgotten about):

- Multiple exposure
- Digital Teleconverter
- Bulb mode (but I use LiveComp and LiveTime a lot)
- Most of the JPEG output stuff (so no in-camera HDR, filters, picture mode, etc - but I have used focus stacking)
- Pro Capture
- Adobe colour space
- Focus peaking
- Video
- Any of the playback functions (slide show etc)
- AF illuminator
- Beeping noices (focus confirmation beep drives me potty!)
- AF focus adjustment
- Multi-function button or its settings (got it mapped to ISO)
- Histogram (but I use the "blinkies" religiously)
- Mode Guide
- Selfie Assist
- Exposure shift
- Any metering mode except "ESP" (I rely on Liveview with blinkies)
- Shading compensation
- WB settings (always on Auto - I shoot raw :))
- Keep warm colour
- Quick Sleep
- Changing image dimensions/aspect ratio
- Timelapse
- LV close-up mode (still haven't figured what this does)
- DOF preview
- OVF simulation mode
- iAuto mode
- External flash sync socket
- Mechanical shutter without EFCS (anti-shock)
- Stabiliser off
- Touch screen - except as a focus point pad
- The second card slot

Things I use seldom and could live without:

- Keystone
- De-fish
- Hi Res mode

For multiple exposures in camera, see the work of Valda Bailey

Ah yes! Switching these off also belongs in the 'first things with a new camera' thread *chr

Interesting thread which shows how wonderfully diverse we all are in terms of what we shoot, how we shoot it and how we use our cameras

I do use multiple exposure to get that out of the way.

To actually answer the question though I don't use.

> digital teleconverter
> art filters
> jpeg other that occasionally to review B+W on camera
> programme modes of any sort
> so far Pro Capture but I can envisage I may do in certain circumstances
> High def
> video

I do use many of the excellent facilities which the EM1.2 offers

> bulb and live time/composite
> focus stacking
> HDR but only as a convenient bracketing tool with the actual blending in PS
> multiple exposure
> level tool - I check and calibrate regularly and it seems to be and remain accurate
> live histogram plus under/over exposure blinkies
> focus peaking as well as AF depending on the situation and my mood
> button/control customisation
> preview button to check focus and/or depth of field along with magnification.
> the screen at all sorts of angles
> IS except when on a tripod although I remain open minded as to the real need to switch off when on a tripod as I've never been able to identify any difference when I have looked

In short a personal mix of functions which work for me. This is one of the beauties of this system in that it can be customised in a very personal way and that with the advantages of mirrorless is one of the reasons I always recommend Oly kit if asked.

Actually I do find the video mode useful for making notes when working onsite. It also helps me to locate where I took closeup stills, which is easily forgotten over a two or three day period.
