Yes a agree a good example and thanks for showing. As some of the links have suggested the unadjusted version using ETTR does not look too good but as soon as you bring into LR5 and auto tone snap out comes a much better image. I assume that in LR5 the image has now been ETTL with a negative value showing on the exposure slider. I think I would have increased the shadows slider a bit as that is the bit that ETTR will show less noise than normal.

Did you just dial in +2.0 EV or did you follow the method suggested. i.e how did you establish that highlights were not being clipped?

I basically used the 2nd method outlined in the article, I dialed in 1.3, used ESP exposure mode and had bracketing set to 3 at .7 EV intervals, so 0.6, 1.3 and 2.0. This may still clip whites, but it didn't here and it was a swan against a dark wood and I picked the brightest version.

I can stick the ORF somewhere if anyone wants a play.

This is a good example. The raw did show some clipping of both highlights and shadows. But given the subject matter a swan is white so parts of it to my mine should be 100% and it would not matter that those parts are clipped.

I had clipped highlights when I took fireworks but felt that it did not matter as parts of the explosion of the firework comes out as 100% white and I see that as white heat.

Like Chris I have lifted the shadows reduce highlights and adjusted blacks. I have also done a very minor noise adjust. I have used LR5.6

It was interesting that the Auto tone took the exposure to +0.5. According to the article this rather suggests that you had not quite optimum exposure.

The one you posted shows the exif as a +0.7EV. So I am guessing that when you dialled in +1.3 and then went to HDR it reset the exposure to 0 and did a 0 -0.7 and +0.7.

As you use LR5 I have posted the screen shot showing the adjustments I have made.

Thanks for taking the time to look at this. In my test I never used HDR.

However, I'm causing confusion. I misread the EXIF data, and this version is actually the darkest version - +1.3 bracketed by -0.7. My humble apologies for misleading everyone!



Looking at the data in RawDigger the green channels are clipped, but modern RAW software can obviously do a good job at rendering an image with some channels clipped. There's an interesting writeup on the subject of Histograms on RAW data in their documentation here Much of that flies way over my head.

I think I'll now try landscapes using the more precise spot metering on the brightest bits of the scene and see what happens.

Hi John, I found this article to be so much BS....as I have said many times I enjoy my digital camera probably more than all the other SLR and film cameras of the past. I enjoy photography for the fun of it and I hope anyone that looks at what I have done enjoys them as well. Hope all is well with you and that you have survived the illness...but it has not tied you down in a chair thank goodness.
