    Re: Autumn colours - North

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal (near Harrowgate) is a wonderful place with lots of photographic opportunities. There's the ruined abbey, Capability Brown parkland and wooded areas.

Jim's idea of Chatsworth is good. There's lots of variety (deciduous woodland, waterfalls, lakes, Hunting Lodge etc.) in the estate above the House.

The autumn colours have yet to develop fully - there haven't been many cold nights as yet. See image #2 below.

Here are a couple of photos from a walk yesterday afternoon from Surprise View car park (on the A6187 near Millstone Edge) down through Padley Gorge and back via the BoleHill Quarries. (approx 5Km).

That's interesting Chris I'm going to Padley tomorrow. I'd have thought it would have been turning more red and gold by now. Nice shots. Chatsworth as a start was my suggestion actually but no probs. I thought it would be an easy place for people to get to.

I don't think that can be the Hope Valley I know. The Hope I know is in the the Derbyshire Peak district - the dreary village with the cement factory. Perhaps I've never explored it enough!

              Phil,
Apologies - I should have re-read the earlier posts more carefully.
I agree with the view that Chatsworth would be easy to locate for anyone unfamiliar with the Peak District.

Maybe this is good - it might be saving it's best show for the day of the meet.

Same Hope Valley as you know Jim but...
... the photo location is "Surprise View" - perhaps it's called that because folk are surprised not to see the cement works (which is hidden behind Shatton Moor - the shoulder of land on the left hand side).
Also having good light makes most things look better.

I could probably make any Peak district location, depending on the date.

                    This sounds promising.

I think other comments regarding light are important so i suggest early morning or late afternoon, regardless of the location.

It's an excellent site but be prepared for a lot of walking Studley Royal is large.
Went there this August and the water gardens had almost dried out, they should be back to normal now.

Shall we go for Studley Royal? It will have to be next week for me, though.

How are you getting there, Ian? It's quite a haul for a day out from Hemel I'd be tempted but for that.

I might be able to join you at Studley Royal as it's not far from here, an hour or so, but night-time driving is a no-no for me at the moment so I'd have to leave well before dark. The opening times are here:
