  • eGroup Meetup Bird in Flight - Fens Falconry Sunday 9th March

Thanks to Andy Elliot, the Cambridgeshire-based ZD 300mm f/2.8-toting BIF specialist, we're planning a day at Fens Falconry near Wisbech, Cambridgeshire on Sunday, 9th March.

The underlying purpose of this event is, once and for all, to settle the various questions surrounding the suitability of the Olympus OM-D E-M1 for BIF photography. However, if you just want to photograph the birds or meet fellow-members, that's fine too!

My personal view is that the E-M1 is certainly capable stunning BIF images - indeed Andy, and some others, have already proven this. But the fact is that many E-M1 owners have not replicated the kind of success that Andy and others have demonstrated. There is no guarantee that you will come away from the day an expert BIF photographer but I do hope that there will be great tips to be learned that will help your photography if you need it.

The day is not exclusively for EM-1 users; any Four Thirds or Micro Four Thirds gear is welcomed! I will hopefully bring along the latest new gear recently announced by Olympus (OM-D E-M10, m.Zuiko 25mm f/1.8) and I will bring some big telephoto lenses from the e-group hire stock for everyone to try.

    Weather!

This event does depend on reasonably decent weather, so if the forecast a few days beforehand is bad - I may have to postpone things. However, I will keep everyone interested updated.

There is no charge for the event!

If you are interested in coming along, please email admin@e-group.uk.net

If you have any questions or comments, please post them here although please don't turn this thread into a 'BIF works/doesn't work' discussion!

Re: Bird in Flight - Fens Falconry Sunday 9th March

    Thanks, Ian.

Mike, at Fens Falconry, and I (through my company, 361 Photography) will be setting up photography days in the near future. Although I've run these sort of things before, this day should be a great day out for you all and should give me an opportunity to try things out on some willing victims, sorry, consumers.

Importantly for you, we should be able to get a range of different raptors doing interesting things (both static and moving) for you.

I'm going to give a little presentation at the start of the day to share some basics of techniques and tips with the E-M1 (and with the E-5 and other FT bodies). We will have to keep an eye on maximum numbers (I think 12 photographers - we can accommodate partners as well in the 'comfy seating area').

I'd appreciate anyone who gets nice shots sharing with us to help us show the sort of results a potential customer could get. We'll make sure you get the full credit too.

I'll post some links to photos already taken shortly.

    Cheers

    Andy

Approximately what time are you thinking of this event starting?

John, I'll need to get the ok from Tracey, but if it's OK with her do you want a lift? Seems pointless both driving there separately and I'll have to pass your door.

Thanks Simon, Ian has already offered me a lift but if you are going that would save him making a detour. Let me know if you get the necessary permission!

Thanks Ian et al this is such a great idea. Unfortunately for me SWMBO has already something else arranged for that day

Does Andy have a particular set of settings EVF Auto switch, Frame rate, Release settings etc that he is able and willing to share. I think that those who are able to participate would benefit from having them ahead of the day.

The great thing is that whilst I am not able to physically attend I shall be there virtually because of this wonderful forum and its members feedback.

Hope all have a great day.

Yes, if I'm in I'm delighted to offer a lift from just south of Cambridge via anywhere (within reason ) on the way to and from Wisbech.

Oh would love to do this, but might have to juggle plans . Would there be a chance you might consider holding another one if enough interest?

Folks - I haven't firmed up the day yet, but I hope to distribute something ahead of time so you can digest and hopefully need less time in the classroom on the day!

My feeling is that we should meet at 12:30 on the Sunday for tea and introductions (so the folks coming further afield don't need to leave at stupid o'clock) - bring sandwiches for lunch. We'll have a brief run-through of principles and settings and then get cracking.

As to extra days if there is a lot of interest - I'll see what we can arrange.

                          Best Wishes

OK everyone - if you have contacted me via admin@e-group.uk.net you should have recently received an email confirming we have registered your interest. Please let me know if you haven't received this email (sent at about 11:10 today).

A rough count suggests at least 15 people in total will be attending - I will ask Andy if we need to limit numbers as I haven't yet publicised this to members via a newsletter update.
