  • MACRO Olympus Lens For E3

    Hey Everybody

I like to shoot flowers and other kind of macro topics outside.

What is the best lens from Olympus :the 36 mm or the 50 mm ?

If you could illustrate answer with picts , it could be so nice.

    Thank you !

They are both good but the 50mm is definitely the best. The diference is't as much as the price would suggest though and that little 35mm is a steal generally. Sorry I haven't taken enough macro shots to give you a good comparison but if you look through the various threads here you will see that both lenses are capable of stellar results.

I have both and either will do the job very well. The 50mm will give you a longer working distance and more light transmission, but the 35mm provides for true 1:1 macro.

And here are several snaps using the macro lenses for a "challenge"

Sigma make an excellent 105mm f2.8 1:1 macro (I assume it's still available in 4/3). I do have access to one, although I don't often use it and very rarely for true macro. However, here are a few close-ups with this lens.

To quote Westy, "For sale mint condition Sigma DG 105mm 2,8 macro lens four thirds mount. Comes complete with hood front and rear caps and soft case. Really sharp lens, no longer available new". I bought his lens a week or two ago.
Sigma have produced a revised version of the 105mm 2.8 macro (around 18 months ago) but it is no longer made for the four thirds mount as far as I know.

Thanks for clarifying this, seems if you want one now the only option is second hand. Hope you are pleased with yours, it's a great lens.

The 70-300 also does macro/close, at least to the magnification that the 50mm does (0.50x). Certainly not as sharp, but fairly sharp indeed. I like it for flowers because its long focal length means I can stand a meter or more back.

I still reach for my legacy 90mm Tamron macro for the extra working distance. I have found a deal on the 50mm and am considering it to use with my EC14 for a weather/dust sealed set up.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

The 35mm is a very convenient size and its a cracking lens as is the Sigme 105.

Personally I love the 135mm f4.5 Olympus Macro as it works from infinity to 0.5x. I recently brought very cheap new bellows (£30) for 4/3 and use it with my E620. Brilliant 'old school' photography. Reminds me of my Exa1A days of focussing open aperture then stopping down! Results are excellent but am away from my PC so cannot show....

Here's a couple of flower photos (cropped) using the 35mm lens on my E30.

I also use the Sigma 150mm macro lens on the E30 too (it's big & heavy), but they are only available used now.

My vote is for the 50mm; it costs a bit more than the 35 but results are exceptional even wide open. The additional speed is very useful over the 35 and it doubles up as a great Portrait lens.

If you've put a photo up, it isn't showing.
