    Re: E-5 Raw files

I would imagine you have to update Adobe Camera Raw. Lightroom 3 now opens E-5 RAW images, and that uses the RAW engine...

      This might be helpful

      http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407111.html

which states that the E-5 needs Camera Raw 6.3 - which I've a horrible suspicion is not compatible with CS-4.

However my understanding of Adobe products is only sufficient enough to avoid investing in their upgrade treadmill.

        Re: E-5 Raw files

You need CS5 or Elements 9 to open E-5 ORF Raw files or you could download the latest free Adobe DNG converter and convert them to DNG Raw which will open in CS4.

          Hi,

I shall be following this path as you have described.
I shall be converting all my Raw files to DNG.
          Many thanks

Can somebody tell me why Windows does not recognize RAW picture files in the same way as JEPG's?

That's because JPEG is a standard file format while raw files are in proprietary formats determined by each camera manufacturer and usually vary between models as well. You can however download CODECS for Windows which will enable it to decode raw files. I use Widows Vista and downloaded codecs which allow it to display raw files from my e-510 and e-600. Can't remember what the download source was but a Google search should find it for you.

This is not correct. I can view all ORFs as thumbnails in Explorer on my Windows 7 laptop including E-5 and the latest E-PL2 Pen ORFs thanks to the Olympus RAW codec.

To quote di.support@olympus-europa.com: "The ORF codec is not available from Olympus"

My OS is Vista and I can view ORFs from my E30 as thumbnails and even open but not those from E5. Any idea where can I get help on this apart from upgrading to Windows 7? In the meanwhile I am using Viewer2 to open and then copy to PSE9 as this is the software I am used to and prefer.

                      Re: E-5 Raw files

That's very strange, there should be no difference in operation between Windows Vista and Windows 7 in this respect.

I would try uninstalling (then re-booting) and reinstalling the codec and ensuring you have latest version.

All that happens is that Windows uses the JPEG thumbnail in the RAW file within Windows Explorer.

                        Hi
What I did was Open Adobe Photoshop. Go to Edit .preferences.File handling File saving Options and tick a box in there. Then you will see you ORF files displayed.
Other that that you need to down load a DNG file to open E-5 Raw files in CS4 like I have.

                          Re: E-5 Raw files

I've finally, in a round about way, managed to get ORFs to display thumbnails in windows. So now I am interested in why Windows displays the ORF with the same appearance as the i-Enhance file alongside but when I open the ORF in ACR it appears as it should. This now virtually makes it a waste of time to shoot in Raw plus Jpeg if it is not possible to compare the two without opening the Raw and converting to jpeg first. Anyone with any ideas or tips on this?

                            Re: E-5 Raw files

I think Ian's earlier comment explains what's going on:

All that happens is that Windows uses the JPEG thumbnail in the RAW file within Windows Explorer.
The embedded thumbnail in the raw file is just a copy of the full JPEG that the camera has generated using whatever settings you used, so it will look the same.

These days generated JPEGs are very good indeed, and as far as I can see there is no longer any inherent quality benefit in working from raw as long as the camera has generated the JPEG that you want. The advantage of using raw comes when you want to do some processing that is different from what the camera did in producing the JPEG. Examples could be that you used an art filter in the camera and want to see what it was like without it. Or maybe the lighting was odd and the camera got the white balance a bit wrong, or dynamic range was extreme and you want to optimise for a different area on the tone curve. You can correct some of these things by editing the JPEG, but will often get better results by correcting them from the raw file. And of course if you have generated a JPEG in black & white it's quite a challenge to get the colour back, but it's all there in the raw file.

                            Ciao ... John

Yes, thanks John, it is now all clear. I think I will stick to raw only as I am happy with using ACR. Although I can't open the ORF in windows to check focus etc. I can do that with Viewer 2, although I don't use that for PP much as I have been using ACR for years and I am comfortable with my workflow with it in PSE.
