As you may know, work is slowly but steadily being undertaken to refine the new version of our vBulletin forum software platform over at our sibling site Four Thirds User. This work means that when we come to finally update the e-group we should be able to get going smoothly without any major learning-curve hitches.
Why are we updating the platform?
1. vBulletin 5 is compliant with small screen mobile devices.
2. It is more resilient to attack from spammers harbouring malware, both inherently and in that we can update the server operating software to later more resilient versions.
4. It has a more up to date look.
5. New tools for posting, including a new editor, and managing your posts and images are provided.
6. We're currently on vBulletin 3 here - we experimented with version 4 on FTU but both 3 and 4 are really at end of life with limited support from the supplier.
Will there be any down-sides?
vBulletin 5 is a major redesign of the previous versions of the vBulletin platform. This means most of the third party extensions we have used over the years will no longer work. Some of these have been incorporated into vBulletin itself, but others will be missing when we make the change. We will both gain and lose, which is frustrating, but until (if) equivalent extensions become available, some features will be missed by some.
I will do a more in-depth summary of what's new and what will be lost later.

I also invite you to try the FTU forum. You will need to register there if you aren't already registered. It's still under development but you can get a feel for how it works and you can provide feedback that is always very wecome. I have already been able to make reconfigurations in response to such feedback.
