  • POTD Monday 1st December 2008

Our very first e-group Picture of the day is by KEITHBD, and is a beautiful contre-jour shot of a sailing boat on the solent taken at a recent members' meet:

This picture was nominated by Ellie, who organised the meet. She explains:

"The light that day was challenging, quickly changing from being reasonably good to almost dark and back again.

I think this excellent picture captures the atmosphere of the Solent and the challenge of sailing there, although I'm sure purists would say the photographer should have waited a moment until the sails passed across a gap in The Needles."

Ellie had also commented on a banding problem with the sky tones, but Keith has since corrected that, and this is the version we're featuring today.

    Well done Keith!

    Ian

PS Do you have an image to nominate? Please contact me or email forum-admin@e-group.uk.net with a link and a short explanation.

A couple of hours and no comments?

I think this is a wonderful picture. One of the best I have seen taken with an E-510. t-up

Not really contra-jour IMO but still a pleasing image.

The idea of POTD is such a good one it should take off and gain popularity as more people see the range of stunning images that are taken. Hopefully it will also encourage more of the visiting guests to sign up.

Re: POTD Monday 1st December 2008

There is a lot to like about this picture. I like the boat "entering frame" from the left and the juxtaposition against the Needles is a master stroke.

For perfection, I would rather the sail didn't intersect one of the Needles. Does the depth of field reach the background or is it slightly soft? Also the colour balance seems slightly cold - however both of these could be laptop monitor.

Technically is seems quite challenging: I figure this used a really long lens from the shore in fading light - so a well captured shot. I don't suppose you could get the yacht to go around for a second pass, so all in all, a Good One

                Sorry Ian

Some of us are not allowed to log on to the forum while at work

It's a cracker of a picture, taken under very difficult conditions (I was there!).

A worthy 'picture of the day'

A cracking picture to start us off, well done Keith! What I really like about this picture is it seems to capture the mood so well.

Sorry to take so long to comment, but some of us have to work for a living!

I was trying to find something wrong with the picture because I was so jealous. An excellent POTD to start the series.

                          I'm delighted for you Keith

I had no idea your picture would be the first ever uk e-system's POTD

I'm sure Ian's going to have his work cut out from now on, sorting through all the nominations because there are so many excellent pictures in the gallery.
