  • What are these bugs??

Recently I was in the Helmsley Walled Garden when, as one does, I did some shots of the Sunflowers.

Hard to get an arrangement without damaged blooms, but I did get this:

When I got home and got it into Lightroom, I found I had bugs in the centre, busily pollinating.

I do not recall having seen these yellow, black and white striped creatures before:

Can somebody please ID them for me?

    Thanks. . .

Thanks Stewart, Hoverflies is a good start for me.

However searching for the particular species, with black yellow and white bars is proving elusive.

This link gives a large number of UK species, but I can't find them on there:

They're not bugs. Bugs have sucking mouthparts.

(I felt compelled to pick you up on it, because calling all insects bugs is another iniquitous Americanism! )

I think you'll find that these are Episyrphus balteatus which are probably the most common of the Hoverflies in Britain and Europe.

Point taken, "bugs" really suggests multiple software malfunctions.

I put the main image on my Stock Photography site, but described them as "pollinators" rather than bugs.

I am still looking out for what type of hover fly they are. . .
