I think this is a clever idea, I would never have thought of doing that and it seems to have worked well. It would be interesting to see how it works on different settings.

I have taken slow shutter shots but on my HBlad Can you say what settings you had it on & how you took it? It's nice the only thing is the continuity of the water is not 100% the droplets in the flow catch my eye distracting me from the serenity of the silky water.

I've left the exif data intact on this.

Plenty of more shots at differing settings, unfortunatley, spilt some coffee on the keyboard of the laptop I had these on this morning. Good news is there still on the memory card but I'll have to install olympus master on ther other laptop to convert the RAW's.

You would need a very powerful flash to out-shine the ambient light.

          Good ideas though

I can certainly see what you're getting at, and it's so almost there. Missing something, though. Perhaps a little saturation boost on the leaves? Dunno.

An FL50 just off frame to the left of the 12foot drop, plenty of power in the shaded woodland, more a question of blalaning flash and ambient exposure.

This is one uploaded to my Flickr account earlier, No Exif Intact. Not as sure about the white balance but maybe shows more promise of exposure balance.

I think it's better with this crop - showing the tail of the pool. It's way too blue or cyan on my calibrated monitor, though.

Ok other laptop up and running, This one with exif intact 1/3 sec f7.1 no neutral filter.

I've sharpened this a touch in Master with a slight crop to loose the gorilla pod leg, oh for a live view camera.

Re: Just something I'm toying with

It's an interesting idea - but I'm not entirely sure it's quite there from my PoV... I think the frozen droplets are a bit too sharply defined... I like everything else about it.

Personally, I'm getting more than a little bored with the ultra-long-exposure moving water pix where someone appears to have spilt a tanker of milk over the rocks or whatever. It's just so unrealistic - no more what we see than a 1/4000th frozen moment.

So I can see what you're trying for here, and it's something I've been giving some thought to myself, although I hadn't thought of trying flash. Very interested to see more tho' - it might perhaps be better to try blending a slow and a really, really slow shutter speed? Essex is bit short on waterfalls (and the fountains that still work will probably be switched off for the winter/ season of adding bubble bath soon) or I'd have a go myself!

On the slow & realy slow, that would be either multi exposure or photoshop. I have done some multi shots, not of the waterfall in the past but not able to with the E500. Would like to see some tonal mapped, that could work well.
