ORF or JPEG?

Out at East Beach, Southend on Sea yesterday.
Took some pics using Art Filter, Dramatic Tone.
On developing in LR, I noticed some artefacts on the JPEG. I got the same effect on all I took recently using Dramatic Tone filter.
I have not had this effect before when using DT filter. Exposure using aperture priority, no difference in technique as I remember.
Anyone got any ideas why this should happen?
Here is the JPEG, notice the lack of detail in grey area on rocks, RHS, also 'bits' on top of said rocks.


This is from the RAW file, just tweaked in LR to get a similar effect.

What is the quality of the jpeg set at on the camera? It might be down to the amount of compression?

Dunno about quality. I will check, but I haven't changed any settings. I suspect that the quality is fixed by the camera when using the Art Filters.

I am guessing you cleaned all lens etc.,

Thanks Chevvy. Yes, lenses all clean.
I checked the manual and it seems that the quality of the JPEG can vary, I quote, P44, 'Depending on the subject, tone transitions may be ragged, the effect may be less
noticeable, or the image may become more “grainy.”'
So it is really pot luck.
I think I will still use the filters, but then try to get the dramatic effect using LR on the RAW file.

Does the Olympus software also have the same filters as the in-camera ones?
Olympus don't want me to use their software so I can't try it myself.

Don't know Ian, I use Lightroom. I could dig out the Oly disc and see.

Yes, that first image looks like its suffering from a low quality Jpeg setting: Those little jaggies surrounding edges and details are a giveaway..

The dramatic tone has had the effect of appearing to sharpen the image also hence the jaggies, but the one from LR looks a little soft to me Dave which makes me think part of the problem is the original image being unsharp.

Yes and can be applied to RAW post processing great fun

Hi I have had similar issues using DT , I now use on. One software plugins for Photoshop/standalone does the same thing with no issues, I have vers 2.8, perfect 4 and perfect 8 which I got for free from them, not sure why they send me these to me with serial numbers life use.

Worth a try if you have a free to use offer from them.

Here is one done in Perfect Effects, Dynamic Contrast/Grunge Contrast effect. With a bit of tweaking, I could get a better result than in camera DT.
