Earlier this year I made a round trip through Albania, a country with a dark history. Before venturing deeper into the country I made a visit to the capital, an exciting and friendly city with bustling life and crazy traffic. Virtually all structures with any connection to religion (churches, mosques) were torn down after the communists ceased power after WW2, so there is not much to see that dates before that with exception from neo-classic architecture from the 1930s when fascist Italy had occupied the country. On the other hand, many buildings and monuments that were erected on order by the dictator Enver Hoxha are still preserved and many of them have been converted to museums and exhibitions. The most notable is Bunkart, the bunker in the outskirts of the city where the government and parliament would seek shelter in the event of an airstrike from West. It is five floors deep, has more than 300 rooms.

Nice photos. It’s a city that’s on my todo list if not be bucket list. A couple of people where I work have holidayed at one of Albania’s resorts and really enjoyed the place.
