How could anyone forget the Olympus, a beautiful engine in all it's configurations. Haven't been to the Filton exhibition it looks like a good one. Thanks for the reminder Mark.

That's a big lens in the first one. No wonder it needs such a big autofocus motor

Ah, the Harrier ... the one we developed, then sold all that remained when they were pensioned off (for peanuts) to the USA, and are now buying similar (the F35?) for an astronomic price (from the USA).

              Just crackers.

Totally agree. Harrier is the best plane we have produced followed closely by Concorde, along with our neighbors.........

                  Re: You forgot this one................:-)

I have been told that the Olympus engines on the Concorde were so powerful even when idling that they could only start one engine whilst the plane was at the terminal. This was because the pusher trucks that move the planes away from the gate were not strong enough to push against the thrust. They started the other three once the plane had a clear path forward.

I have been fortunate enough to have a short trip in Concorde from Heathrow around the Bay of Biscay and back. Actually flying at 60,000 ft doing over Mach 1 felt just the same as flying on any commercial passenger jet. What sticks in my mind was to feel the shear acceleration at take-off and the breaking when landing again. It was a superb piece of engineering.

Great pieces of engineering; undoubtedly the best of British. I wish I had been able to fly in Concorde (or a Harrier come to that).

Note how they use 'tie-wraps' to prevent people turning the compressor and getting their fingers cut off (but I would really like to see something more substantial than tie-wraps!).

Also, nasty bit of F.O.D. on the top 1st stage blade!
