Re: Communal dragonfly and butterfly thread

Peter, that looks a good ID, thanks

What is nice about the way this thread is developing is that the images aren't the usual close focus on the subject but are from far enough back to include details of the environment in which they were captured

Thanks for starting it Peter & Ron

Re: Communal dragonfly and butterfly thread

      Great idea.

Can I suggest such a communal thread for all things "Spider"? That way I can steer well clear of it!

Seriously, I'm not a fan of spiders, and accidentally coming across images of them here, as I have done, makes me want to go off and have a shower, or lie down in a darkened room. If they were all in one thread, I could just never look there!

Butterflies are nice to look at, but arachnoids? Nooooo!

Re: Communal dragonfly and butterfly thread

No spiders here Margaret but I hope you don't mind caterpillars. Here is another shot of a Swallowtail butterfly at Strumpshaw Fen in June, along with a Swallowtail caterpillar which I took last year. The caterpillar is unusual in that it was one of several which were feeding on Fennel plants in the garden outside the reception building. The eggs are usually laid on Milk Parsley, which is only found in a few places these days.

        E-M1 and 75-300 II.

Re: Communal dragonfly and butterfly thread

Ron amongst the buttons to say 'thank-you' and 'like this' I now feel the need of one saying 'lucky @*?!$' and 'envy you'. I have been to Norfolk to see Britannicus only when I was young but without success. So I content myself with european versions. Lovely fresh specimen and excellent shot of a caterpillar too. Expertly taken.

            ....press button repeatedly.!!

Re: Communal dragonfly and butterfly thread

Two more from France. I will then look out some more behavioural shots from England.

This is to 'gently' upset Ron (well he upset me first! with his swallowtail). A Southern White Admiral. But not the White Admiral we get in the UK. A personal favourite of mine and quite hard to see in the UK but when you do see them it is a wonderful sight.

Can you imagine the Gite we stayed in had them in the Garden, and they fed from the buddleia. So the challenge was to get them away from the buddleia and take them when they posed on something more exotic.

I have dozens of shots and one I might add later shows off a wonderful iridescent blue which shines in a special way on the black upper-side. But the under-side is fantastic too.

And then A Queen of Spain fritillary

This one had a clipped wing from a bird attack. I have taken the shot to minimise the impact of the war-wound. But as Brian said it is important to me to see the insect in it's real situation and to be able to tell it's story. This one beat a bird strike, and lived to fly another day.

Two stunning beauties there Peter. You are right I am a bit envious. The undersides of butterflies' wings are often as spectacular as the topsides and your Southern White Admiral proves this perfectly. Mind you the undersides of 'our' White Admirals are rather impressive too.

That's a lovely shot with a great setting Cliff, and taken in a wonderful county too. I am not a Flickr user, so can't help you with you posting problem, but I believe it can be done. Perhaps somebody else can help.

Ron I only posted it because I remember you like White Admirals.

So... where else would you see them on roses.?

and this is a shot showing the blue/purple iridescence on the upper-side. Not something I have seen in the UK so I think the light and the wine helps too.

Thank you for posting those wonderful shots from Australia. I feel the need for the envy button again.

What can you tell us about them? And please show us more.

                              kind regards

Thank you for posting. I now get your pictures on my Flickr feed. I know you can post them here but, like Ron, haven't a clue how. But Brian has helped (thank you for your rapid help)
