  • Paddle Wheels on the Murray

We are actually still on holidays for another week but laptops being laptops means we can can keep in touch!

The weather has been mostly apalling but here are some taken on the Murray River at Echuca, Northern Victoria during one rare sunny day.

The Canberra was built in 1912 and fully restored in 2003.
It is driven by a superb 1923 Wood fired Marshall Compound Steam Engine.

The Emmylou is the only woodfired paddle steamer in the world offering full accommodation and cuisine.
It is fuelled by Red Gum logs that grow along the river.

That looks like a super trip on a lovely old boat, a real touch of class. Glad you are getting at least some good weather, Mark, I do hope it improves for you.

      Hi Mark,

Your shots are very evocative of that area of the Murray and really capture the essence of that great river and the red gums, nice work.
We loved it when we drove up there from Melbourne and wished we could have spent more time there.
I found an almost untouched shot of the Emmylou taken in December 2002 with a very cheap digital camera (came free with a new PC I had bought)!
Great to see her still plying her trade!
It's an area we would like to go back too - one day maybe.

      Regards
      Jeremy

That is an amazingly good shot of the Emmylou considering the camera, Jeremy. While shooting the Canberra undergoing restorations on the slips, I met old Charlie, the restorer who gave us lots of info on the various paddle steamers he has worked on. I could kick myself for missing the opportunity to get a portrait of him at work.

This is a lovely spot on the river Mark.
I like the shot with the logs in the foreground.

            Hi Mark,

Not a bad picture from that camera - I was quite surprised looking at it again.
As you say a pity you didn't get any portraits of old Charlie - would have capped the series off nicely. Next time eh!
I also agree with Lyn regarding the logs shot. I didn't really look properly but with the boats in the background, the cut logs, the standing trees and the tree trunk with the bark missing - it brings it all together nicely as a story in a single image.
Love the Gum trees and the associated eucalypts - could take pictures of them all day long!

            Regards
            Jeremy

Yes Jeremy, you are very perceptive in noticing that the pic with foreground logs, trees and bark with paddle steamers in the background sums it up in one.

The log shot is my favourite of the series also, Lyn.
I hope your getaway has got off to a good start.

Lookout for the Scenic Photo Points along the way - they are marked with a little camera icon! LOL

We drove down to Melbourne in pouring rain this afternoon!

Know the area well - and the Canberra. Your pics are great.

Thanks Terry - I am itching to return to Southern NSW where there was more material than time to photograph.
