In all probability Blair would reach for his satellite phone and ask 'dubbya' for advice!

There was an interesting item on the BBC website yesterday about why the Germans still love the UK. Our love for tea and dark humour was mentioned.

I remember a quote from the late George Burns:

'No wonder the country's in such a mess - the only people that know how to run it are either cutting hair or driving taxis!'

To which I might add - or posting on internet forums!

I agree. Cameron on a day to day basis is an easy person to like and his achievements are many. I particularly like that fact that he worked so well with the Lib Dems in the coalition.

However, last night on Andrew Neil's This Week programme I couldn't disagree with some really rather sobering criticisms from regular pundit and Tory colleague Michael Portillo, basically that Cameron will be remembered for all this rather tham anything else and that the referendum was completely unnecessary. I never thought Europe was a major issue with the electorate, it only became one when the referendum was activated. It was a misguided political move to head off the Tory swivel-eyed Eurosceptics who were driving a significant number of Tory seats the way of UKIP.

I do think, however, that Cameron quit for honourable reasons. There is also a theory that he quit and so delayed the Article 50 trigger, enabling the consensus on leaving the EU to sway. He has denied Brexit Extremists their cut-and-run option. Nevertheless, we shouldn't have had the referendum and for that we have to lay the blame at Cameron's door.

As an aside, I wonder what any Americans might make of the title of this topic.

                  Re: Johnson not standing!

In the words of the old Prayer Book I would say we were 'quietly governed' under David Cameron.

Whilst David Cameron clearly had his faults there was none of the dogma of Maggie Thatcher or Tony Blair, and much more dynamism than John Major or Gordon Brown. Indeed, Mr Cameron seemed genuinely keen to reach consensus wherever a consensus was possible. Perhaps that was his undoing. Perhaps a leader like Maggie Thatcher would have handbagged the EU mandarins until she secures a better deal for the UK, but that is just supposition on my part.

Let's just hope that whoever follows can live continue in a similar vein, and without drama. A good sense of humour would also help.

Given their choices I should imagine they would be quite envious of our politicians.

Maybe we could export some under a new trade agreement?

By whatever definition of FRAUD you wish to use, the Brexit campaigners need to be made to account for their actions and the statements they made:

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that they want to rejoin the EU.
