I've driven Foresters. Too low to get into and, more importantly, out of.

If you can afford it, a used BMW x5 (or even x3) might be worth a look.

Not sure of current models, but used, the X5 is available with 3 litre straight six and 5 litre V8 petrol engines. The X3 with 2.5 and 3 litre straight sixes. For example:

Thanks, but used isn't an option, for warranty reasons.

Plus, I'm not a BMW person!

Just ordered a Yeti. 1.8TSi L&K 4x4. Should be with me end of the month. Great deal!

Don't think you will be disappointed with it from what neighbours say.

Diesel is perfect, apparently. Shed loads of torque, so good performance, and low consumption. Low pollution too (as long as you are not driving behind one).

However (speaking as an unreformed petrolhead) there's no drama to a diesel. Eventually we will all be driving diesel hybrids where the engine runs at a steady 2250 rpm and the gearbox shuffles up and down it's 11 gears. Mmm. Exciting :-)

I think that depends on the car. Admittedly diesels don't have the excitement of a knife-edge power band that I used to love on two-stroke bikes, but the sheer tree-stump pulling torque of a big diesel engine is a pleasure all of its own.

Likewise, the ability to accelerate strongly and overtake whilst climbing steep hills in top gear.

I was never a fan of diesels but the V6 engine in my Jag (coupled with the 7 Series gearbox) has converted me.

                      Re: Anyone got a Yeti?

I do like the growl and grunt of a good diesel, but it's a different matter when they're crippled by a DPF.

The Yeti has now passed through customs and I collect it Monday afternoon.

I'm also interested in the Yett brand and I'm intrigued when you mention that it's clearing customs. I've been looking at Drive the Deal, Broadspeed, etc. but assumed the car would be sourced from the UK.

                          Re: Anyone got a Yeti?

It's a normal UK dealer, but they have to come in from the foreign therefore HM Customs have an interest in the whole shipload of 800 or so!

Unusually, this car had been built but not allocated, and was sitting in the dock at Emden awaiting a dealer to request it. There are very few Yetis sitting unsold in the UK.

                            Re: Anyone got a Yeti?

I might chose a diesel for my next car.

My Skoda Octavia vRS has 180 BHP, which on the face of it is plenty for towing. The problem is that at 60 MPH I'm forever having to change gear with varying road conditions. There just isn't enough torque at 2400 RPM.

It would tow quite happily at 70-80 MPH - if it were allowed.

I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts / experience of the 1.8TSi, StephenL, like you the DPF equipped diesel is no longer viable for me so I'm looking at the petrol options.

                                I'll tell you next week!

Jim, for towing the diesels are ideal, as long as you're doing the mileage. There's a reason why trucks are DERVs!
