  • external drive on mac

Got a Samsung M3 external drive that worked OK on my iMac till I went away for a few days. Mac was shut down and then started up when I came back but now I cannot find it. It doesn't show in Disk Utility, finder or on the desktop.
Tried it on my macbook air and id don't show on that either.
External disks is clicked in finder too.
    Any advice?

Does the disk have an external power supply? Or its own on/off switch? Can you try another cable?

No external power supply, no on/off switch. Cannot try another cable as it is different than any I have. USB one end, Samsung special on other.

Can you actually hear the disk spinning when it's connected? (no help to you, but I now refuse to buy Samsung as everything of theirs I've bought has failed just out of warranty)

Does the case have any leds or neons to indicate that it is functioning. Try wiggling the plugs and sockets but being careful of disconnecting the enabled drive after actually connecting the drive momentarily

Can the drive be removed from the case - in which case you should be able to re home it in another case.

Does it get recognised when plugged into another computer via the USB connection.

It has a light that comes on when plugged in to USB
It is not recognised on my macbook.

It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

Disconnect it, restart the Mac and plug it back in.

Done that, makes no difference. It will not show on my wife's windows machine.

It could be the drive or enclosure. I'd pull the drive out of the case and try it in a different enclosure.

                        Hi,
I had this happen to a Maxtor drive. From memory, research showed the USB port did not have enough power for the drive.
Suggest you look on manufacturers website.
Personally, I bought another drive with a power supply.

As per the above post... If yours is a new Mac with USB 3 ports, not entirely sure but I believe the power output is less than the USB 2.

I would try it out on another make, one with USB 2? If it is a power shortage on the Mac then it should show up.
It's not what inspires us that is important, it's where the journey takes us.

My Mac has USB3 ports and happily powers external drives. Besides, Dave says it used to work.

If it isn't seen on a Widows machine either, it does sound like the drive, or possibly just the enclosure, is cooked.
