  • Determining walking distance using any online maps... possible...?

    Hey All

I was wondering on the weekend if there is a method where one can use an online map such as google maps to determine the length of a walk... not the length of a drive!

We've done some tremendous walks recently and I am curious as to how far we actually walked. Is this possible...? I know it can be done for driving between two points, but many walks we've done have no roads or tracks and so can't use google maps to determine this.

Anyone know of anything - well, apart from a recreational GPS system...?

    John,

Not sure about Google but there are various PC options like memory map and Anquet, but these are silly money if you ask me.

I would get the Explorer 1.25 map for your area which will give you accurate mapping and access info plus landmarks etc, then combine it with the handy measuring wheel seen here.

It is good fun to plan walks like this, you can then match up your original estimates as to what it says on your pedometer. You do have a pedometer.....??!

I recommend the waterproof explorer maps for a few quid extra.

Hey John - I have the excellent Explorer maps already, for the Brecon Beacons and my local area. I do like the look of that map measuring device though, great link thanks.

I think what you're after is a "google maps mashup" application. Or atleast one would fit the bill.
        eg http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

The location will default to the US but you just enter where you want to be in the search box. Then hit start and begin clicking. Info displayed on the left. The usual satellite view etc is available. (And you don't have to click on roads etc, just anywhere as I presume it uses the scale of the map to work it out for you).

Alternatively, for a more directions orientated service
        http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/viamich...tyCountry=1138
In the advanced options you can select On Foot and it will give directions and distance for foot travel.

        Hope that helps,
        All the best,
        Phil

Surely there are only two real measurements of a walk

Before you start - It's going to be further than you thought

After you finish - It's not as far as you think it was

              There is a 3rd measurement.

How many pints does one consume in the break on said walk? This could vary the distance back considerably.
