          Re: Olympus HLD9 - Grip OM-D E-M1 Mark II

The grip has a few advantages:

          1. Spare battery so capacity for more shots

          2. Extra set of controls that you can use in portrait mode while keeping your hand in roughly the same place

          3. Some people feel that it balances better with big lenses

          4. Needed if you want to run the camera with the mains adapter.

Disadvantage - makes the camera bigger and heavier.

I've used them with the E-M5 and E-M1 Mk I, mainly because they were "free" when I bought the bodies. The extra battery was useful with those bodies, at least in part because the battery charge indicator was so poor that you could be taken by surprise when a single battery ran out. With the Mark II we seem to have a proper percentage display that is fairly reliable, which makes this much less of a problem.

In the end it comes down to personal taste - some people like them some don't.

            Pretty much as John says.
My two main positives are the extra capacity and handling with larger lenses at for example an Airshow. It's a bit larger than the old E-M1 MkI grip so I tend to go gripless when out on a walk.
