Looks really good - 64 bit and with other features which, for me, may mean no more Photoshop. Can't see the Pen's in the supported list although other cameras are said to be supported that were not in A2. Suprised by that as I had always understood that camera raw support was through the system software and not individual progam software?

      Re: Aperture 3 just announced

Hi, sounds like it has some nice new features, I'm particularly interested in geotagging. However, Apple still doesn't support the E620/E600, or EP1 EP2 raw files which is annoying as I'm thinking about picking up an E600 as a carry most of the time camera. However, the E600 isn't supported in Lightroom either.

        Re: Aperture 3 just announced

THe RAW support is in a file that is shipped with Aperture and is also available standalone.

The slowness of supporting some quite interesting cameras is an ongoing criticism of Apple. Use of DNG as a transfer medium is often discussed.

However one wonders how much the camera manufacturers make it easy or difficult for third party software developers to have access to the Raw file definition in order to protect their investment their own add on conversion applications.

Looks promising, I ordered my trial copy and almost certainly will upgrade from version 2.

I think that is what I thought i.e. that the standalone would form an update to OSX, but no such update as yet.

                Re: Aperture 3 just announced

I have been going over all the info and videos on Apples site on this new update, it looks quite good and I will be trying out the trial this evening and see how well it will perform on a 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo with 4gb RAM (IE:My Mac Mini). I think it was smart of Apple to release it's new version of Aperture before Adobe releases Lightroom 3. I wasn't really happy with the performance of Aperture 2 on my machine compared to Lightroom so we will see how Aperture 3 runs now as a 64bit app on Snow Leopard.

                  Re: Aperture 3 just announced

Once the update of the old library is completed it runs very smooth on my Mac mini (same configuration)

I discovered a nice touch: it now can show the focussing points as well

Performance is on par and lots of nice new features. I am happy.

                    Re: Aperture 3 just announced

DPNow, which is my original and non platform-specific site, has been invited to a press briefing with Apple, with some of their Aperture experts, focusing on Aperture 3 next week, in London (Monday or Tuesday). I will be away on both days and I'd like to offer the opportunity of an e-group visitor who is a seasoned Aperture user to represent DPNow at one of these briefings.

In return, I'd like to receive a short account of your thoughts on Aperture 3 that would be used in a DPNow article. If you are interested, please get in touch asap - email admin@dpnow.com.

                      Re: Aperture 3 just announced

That's a really great offer. Unfortunately I'm not a seasoned Aperture user. I've thought about switching from Lightroom as Aperture is better integrated with OS X and iLife/iWork but it runs too slowly on my G5 to be seriously considered. When I upgrade my computer, then I may switch, it depends on what's in Lightroom 3.

However, if whoever goes could raise the lack of raw support for E620/E600 and EP1/EP2 that would be helpful. I use a E30 but as I said I'm considering buying E600 as a backup/carry round camera & both my Dad and Sister use E620's with iPhoto/Aperture so the lack of raw support is an issue.
                      Cheers
