  • HELP! Workspace with Panny RAW files

Please forgive the rookie question. Along with my Olympus gear, I have a lovely Panasonic GX8. Does the latest edition of Workspace support the import of Panny RAW files? Try as I might, I cannot get it to work.

I have tried both Workspace and Olympus Viewer 3, neither will import the Panasonic/Lumic RAW photos......

Re: Workspace with Panny RAW files

I don't have any to try with, but strongly doubt it

Something I have noted (with some disappointment) is that it gives you the functionality available with a specific Olympus camera so i can't use processes available on later cameras on my older ORF files

Given this I think it's made to be very specific to Olympus files

Re: Workspace with Panny RAW files

Thanks for the quick responses so far- confirms what I suspected. Background is that I usually use Lightroom (web subscription) but really hate what they have done with the export settings in the latest version so was looking to jump ship. Went back to Workspace and am starting to think it suits my needs but then encountered the Panny issue. Have now tried the software that came with the GX8 and that would appear to suit my needs for that camera. So, will probably use the free software and ditch Lightroom.

The Silky/Quirky Pix software that comes with Panasonic cameras (and is available to download for free) is actually a fine raw converter. I recommend having a play with that.

Pretty much what I am going to do. Happy to use Workspace for my Olympus gear and Panny software for the GX8.

Interesting comment - what in particular don't you like about the LR Export?

Re: Workspace with Panny RAW files

I too have a GX8 and shoot RAW + jpeg. I use Faststone, for the vast majority of images, to open both RW2 and ORF files. I believe FastStone uses ACR to open any RAW files.

For "critical" work I use DXO Optics PRO Elite to open RAW files.

Re: Workspace with Panny RAW files

Ian, first bear in mind that I am far from an expert with this kind of thing! When I get in to a routine with software I am at my happiest. Before the update I was happy to edit my RAW files and save batches of the high quality JPEGS to two separate standalone hard drives. It was a quick, almost unthinking process that I recall used the old familiar `save as` route. I set up a folder and saved the files there. Now you have an `export` button and I can only seem to do one file at a time- it takes longer, at least for me. Also, am retired and on a fixed income to saving the monthly payment becomes important.

Silkypix raw converter is pretty good, does a decent job, purely for editing https://www.isl.co.jp/SILKYPIX/english/p/
The last standalone version 6 of Lightroom will also open raw files from a GX8
Works with my G80, but not the newer GX9 which is where the Silkypix comes in handy
Also have Photoshop Elements and the included ACR which also opens/edits raw files

SilkyPix used to be (still is?) bundled with Panasonic Lumix cameras but the last time I used it I found it very difficult to use. I'm sure it includes excellent profiles for use with Panasonic cameras.

One thing worth remembering is that you can use Adobe's free DNG Converter to convert Panasonic RAW files to the universal DNG format, which might widen your choice of software.
