Affinity Photo 1.7 beta

The new 1.7 version of Affinity Photo is now available as a beta test version for existing owners of the app. It installs in parallel with the existing version.

Lots of new features but the best I think is "Alternate futures" for document history. Traditionally, if you roll back the undo history then do something else all your changes after that point are lost. Affinity Photo will now display a small branch icon in the history tab when you do this. Pressing that button will cycle between all the different "futures" after that history entry - meaning you will never lose work you have done. Like software branching!

I follow Affinity on Twitter. I haven't had an email or seen it mentioned anywhere else. I wonder if this is a "soft roll-out"? It took quite a long time to download.

It seems to work a treat! Loads of interesting changes to filters and adjustments.

They have been very busy. There is also a beta of Affinity Designer 1.7, and Affinity Publisher is in beta and will be launched soon. All we need now is the long-promised asset manager (like Lightroom's cataloguing).

I think it’s a mistake that the new Publisher cannot open PagePlus files. I’ve used PP since version 1.0 and it’s a solid DTP programme so I would have liked the ability to merge the two. It seems there are no plans to offer that in the future either.

I started using the beta version of Affinity Photo shortly after it was released and it runs well on my computer. My only complaint is that it seems as if nearly every time I launch it there is an update waiting to be installed. It is great that Affinity are supporting and developing it but it is a lengthy proccess updating it with my asthmatic broadband.

On the subject of the software does anybody have any red hot tips for getting the best from it. I am still very much at the beginner's stage.

One tip for when you want to export your finished photo as jpg. Make sure you select the Lanczos 3 (non seperable) in the Resampling option. It gives a much better quality image.

There are loads of good videos on YouTube, particularly those done by Serif. They are short, to the point and easy to understand. A number are aimed at beginners.

I did ask them about the catalog side when I was looking at new software, they did say they were in the VERY early stages of looking into it, but theres nothing in the immediate future alas. I would have happily bought this software if it had that function too.

I made exactly that change, Elements 10 to Affinity. I kept Elements on the machine just incase, but never use it now. And yes I figured out how to get my existing (free) Nik plugins working within Affinity.

The full release version 1.7 is now available. My previous version 1.67 automatically updated over night without any issues. I have now deleted the Beta.
