While we are here, I remember somewhere that film is more forgiving in highlights and have a wider dynamic range then digital. Have I been misinformed?

No. Transparency films have a dynamic range similar to digital sensors, but negative films have a much wider dynamic range - hence why some simple film cameras have no exposure meter and only one shutter speed and aperture.
Fair competition is usually a good thing, and in this case I believe digital has forced the film manufacturers to up their game considerably compared with some of the crap that we were sold in the 1990's and 2000's.
I have long been a fan of Fuji Velvia but I am increasingly using Kodak Ektar 100 which is a stunning film.
Yes Nigel, some of the latest film stock is quite stunning especially in medium and large format. The tonal range is incredible as is the level of detail in a film such as Ektar 100. I really like Cinestill which is Kodak motion picture film reworked for stills photography.

No Henry you have not, digital has a latitude similar to slide film whereas negative film can be under and over exposed by some margin and still get acceptable results.

Contax compact .... likely runs on CR2 or CR123A which are still readily available. Plenty of film choice too so it definitely deserves to used if only occasionally

I have an old Oly 35RC which I found at a local auction some years ago and which has a mercury battery in it, quite possibly the original, and it works fine. It must be at least 20 years old, anyway.

Shame Olympus's later cameras didn't have such good battery life!
