Hugh Magnum was a portrait photographer active in the Southern US in the 1890s, and was unusual for his time (and place) in taking shots of people of any colour.

Thanks for the link, Andrew. A great example of photography that does (or did at the time) make a very strong political and social point. Photography can be a very powerful tool in this respect and has done much to shape the world and influence opinion.
