  • Fisheye Lenses. Panasonic 8mm (m4/3) Vs Olympus 8mm

    Hi!

I am considering to get a fisheye lens (and have been considering for quite some time now).

Does anyone have any experience with using any of those 2 lenses? (Olympus 8mm 4/3, and Pana 8mm m4/3) any image samples as well?

Is it worth getting the olympus 4/3 since I have the mmf-3 converter or should i go for the pana m4/3 one which is a bit cheaper as well given that the lens will be mounted on my E-M1?

    Thanks!

I love the Samyang, and the fact it is manual focus (and diaphragm) is really irrelevant.

I like my Samyang because it is manual focus and aperture.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

I was considering the Samyang as well but the only thing that worries me is the build quality. It sure can't be anywhere near the build quality of the pana or oly (right?)

Wrong. Built like a brick dunnie.

Well, the Sammy might look like it's built like a brick sh1thouse, but if it's anything like their 14mm f2.8 for FF, then the reality might be different. I had that lens back in my Canon days and it felt similarly well built, but I had problems with the focus operation so took it apart. Inside the build quality was pretty rudimentary.

However, I must say that the 7.5mm MFT fisheye is a great lens optically and I've not had any particular problems with mine. It certainly doesn't suffer from the focus issues I had with the 14mm (which included very poor infinity calibration and severe backlash such that when the ring was set at a particular distance, the actual focus point varied enormously depending from which direction the focus ring was turned).

Over all though, hiven its price and performance, I'd certainly recommend it.

I really like my Samyang 7.5mm. Excellent lens and really easy to use. Not sure I'd splash big money for an Automatic focus Oly or the very big spalsh out needed for the Pany. It's a specialised lens so only gets taken out fairly infrequently.

Well I have to say I am convinced which is why I decided to get the Samyang. All of you seem to be happy with it so I believe I will be satisfied with it as well.

If the build quality and image quality is as good as you say then indeed there is no reason to spend 2 or 3 times more to get the oly or pana. and autofocus is not really essential, it being a fisheye lens.

Thank you all for your input here

I'm sure that you'll like the lens, set to f8 it has a huge depth of field too.

The Samyang 7.5mm is excellent build quality & as others have said built like a tank. I know a number of foggers who have it one has ever complained about its quality. I think for the price you will be impressed.

Another thumbs up for the Samyang. It's a great lens for the price; I have no problems with the build quality of mine or the IQ. In fact the only problem I do have is that I don't use it enough
