The first thing I did when I received my lens was remove the tripod mount and fit the trim ring. I keep my camera in a holster and the tripod mount would make that tricky or impossible.

I do wonder whether it would be more comfortable to hold the lens by the tripod mount when using it, rather than cupping it between the thumb and forefinger of my left hand.

Foe medium-sized lenses like this (4/3rds 50-200, 40-150 f/2.8, 300 f/4) I find a "shoulder pod" really useful. It mounts on the tripod ring and provides good support without restricting mobility. Not cheap, but very effective.

This is the one I use:

BTW there is a site called camerasize.com which lets you compare cameras and with lenses attached. Comparing the two lens in the thread doesn’t quite work as the 300 is fully erect whereas the 100-400 isn’t but hey ho, it was worth a shot!
I remember another site that did a similar thing but I can’t for the life of me remember it, it was something like ‘into the light’ or a similar play on words about lenses and / or light.
Yes the tripod foot is detacheable.

The link in my earlier post was to the camera size site.

Sorry! Missed that and I made a point of checking too, my wife would have described it as ‘man looking’.
