I imagine it will be around f5.6 at 300mm, I think the graduation is fairly linear, i.e. as the focal length increases the the f stop number increases in proportion.

You may well be right in which case that would very much be in the Olly's favour. If it is only half a stop slower that would make it more difficult to choose everything else being equal. It will be fascinating to see detailed reviews once they are both out but probably lots of reviews will not be in sufficient depth to give such detail. I must say having two Pro lenses (12-40 and 40-150) makes me think a 300 prime in the same range promises to be something very special optically.

Well we have time to save for the Panaleica 100-400 Check out the price!http://www.43rumors.com/ft5-panasoni...r-around-2500/
Mind you we don't know how much the mZuiko 300/F4 Pro will be yet!

I will wait until there are some reviews before I leap!

The voting suggests that 19% will buy it. On the whole I would prefer a zoom to a prime but I will take some persuading to part with my 50-200+EC14 in favour of either newer lens.

They're going to be very different lenses, I think.

For a start you've got the flexibility of the zoom, especially for mobile wildlife, and it's greater innate reach, but to set against that the prime is faster and in principle lighter and smaller and hopefully cheaper (!). It's also usable with the t/c, but again at a fixed focal length.

Surely the question to ask first before spending what will be a large amount of cash for any of us is "what can't I do now that one of these will allow me to do, or significantly improve my ability"? When you've answered that (with some genuine and significant benefit to you yourself) you should be well on the way to answering which one to get.

For me to get either will require the E-M1 replacement to have significantly better CA capabilities plus, ideally, a bit better high ISO performance. In that case I would like to develop my skills more in to a variety of sports, wildlife and bird photography. I'm content to dabble in these now and the E-M1/40-150/1.4 combo is easily good enough for that.

If this comes to pass I'll then probably just have one difficult decision: whether to go for the speed of the Oly (best for game drives, indoor sports and early morning birding) or the flexibility of the Panny.

            Mark

What will be interesting will be to see how many shoot at 300mm with either lens or will everyone immediately go for maximum reach at 400mm on the 100-400mm zoom or add the 1.4x TC to the 300mm. For myself I hope that Olympus comes out with a 2x TC for the 40-150mm.

I was thinking the same, maybe not as big as the E-System lens but a lot bigger then the 35-100 Pany X lens.

Yes, I was exaggerating, but unless that guy has got size 5 hands it is surely longer than the 40-150 Pro?

I did a comparison measurement, measured the GH4 width and the length of the lens in the pic then measured my GH3 width found the ratio multiplied the lens in the picture by it and it comes out about 160mm long, that's longer than the Lumix 100-300 by about 25-30mm and about 10mm wider so it's not a gargantuan thing.

I've not done any scientific testing but it appears that the Oly lenses work better on an Oly body and the Panny lenses work better on a Panny body, the mixtures always seem to focus slower.

So whatever the choice of lens, test both back to back before deciding - it's going to be too much money to end up disapointed!

Based on my own entirely subjective tests (!) I'd say on the E-M1 at least the 12-35 focuses in single autofocus just as quickly as the 12-40, while the 40-150 pro is very slightly quicker than the 35-100 f2.8, but the difference is minuscule.

I agree, I've owned lenses and bodies from both manufacturers and can't say I've noticed any noticeable difference in focus speed with any combination on single auto focus.
