  • E5 plus HLD-4 plus 300mm f2.8 plus EC14 hand held?

Previously I had shied away from using this weighty, unwieldy combination for walk about shots on account of my lack of confidence in my and the equipment's ability to bring it all together. I have only ever used the EC14 with everything else when using the kit supported either on a tripod/monopod or hide window ledge. However as I was bored today waiting for the birds to appear from the hide I went for a wander with the full kit. Then a few dragons came along (sorry dragons again!) and I quickly shouldered the beast and fired away. To my surprise and pleasure most of them worked, I am always surprised at the E5's accuracy of AF and capability of the IS.

    Common Darter:

    Another one a male:

    And another male Migrant Hawker:

It is amazing that I achieved anything while waving that massive bit of kit around and at a distance of about 3 metres as well. Hoorah for Olympus Professional kit!

Splendid shots. I also carry this combination around from time to time and am pleasantly surprised at how good the results can be.

Wow - those are sensational. I would never have even thought of using such a big lens hand held like that, especially one that has an equivalent focal length of 850mm. Amazing.

It is interesting that there are often comments on the difficulty of using a weighty outfit such as this, but when you come to think of it a lot of pastimes need some degree of physical training to get the greatest satisfaction from. So why not photography? A lot of Forum users go hill walking, cycling and rock climbing so we are not all couch potatoes. So lets get training!

David, I took E-5; BIGMA; 50-200; SIGMA 150 Macro; Zuiko Macro 50m f2; 14-54 with spare E-1 body and lots of batteries and chips 48 Gb to the Seychelles in May/June and carried it all in my Kata rucksack up hills and mountains over beaches ... and as Hand Baggage through Abu Dhabi airport out and home too ... but the weight of this 300m is nearly double the BIGMA alone

Having horses all my life and skiing and tennis too I have always been fit - still am at 60 but I have limits now I did think about a Mobility Scooter for it all in the basket or swapping my racing bicycle and mountain bicycle for an electric Scooter Just for the 300m lens really

Blimey how long did you have to hold your breath to get these.

I just love the Migrant- he stands out from the stem brilliantly.

On the few days I hired this lens the weather was no good for the insects so didn't get to try it out....but did with some birds and boy did I know about it after...I took the tripod but found it to constricting so wandered around with it hand held.
I managed a few good'uns but with the 520 so that must say how good this lens is.

Excellent handheld shots, given the total weight you were holding!!

Thanks. The Dragonfly is an immature male Common Darter - the female has no red at all.

For that kind of portage would you consider a BMS ? I've visited URL: oboboo.com and tried to image it to be a perfect Solution
But then my name is Clueless for a good reason so I'd like your thoughts. TIA
