  • HELP! Difficult menu system

I love my E-P1 to bits but equally I've never struggled so much with a menu and operating system. The doubling/trebling up of functions may be intuitive in the orient but it's certainly not intuitive to me. I'm not a novice and have mastered many cameras (digital and non-digital) and their systems in my time but the E-P1 menu has largely defeated me so far. As a result there are many photo opportunities which I would otherwise pursue which prove too convaluted to set up and adjust and are therefore lost or end up captured in Auto only.

Is anyone aware of a decent user guide - better than the Olympus user guide supplied with the camera or even the Magic Lantern guide? Alternatively has some kind soul posted a You Tube video dealing with mastering the system? If so the link would be really appreciated.

If there ever was a need for talented technical authorship it's the E-P1.

Shortcomings in the structure and explanation of the E-P1s menu system is particularly galling when I love everything else about the camera.

Do you use the Super control panel? It's a bit hidden on the E-PL1 but basically it's the matrix of options that we are familiar with on E-System DSLRs.

I find this is the best option.

This page on the Olympus America site explains it well.

The Super Control Panel was introduced with the E-500 in 2005, so if you have only used the E-1, you may be unfamiliar with it. Personally, I think it's one of the best features Olympus came up with.

          Thanks Ian

However theres nothing on the E-P1 page that I can see.

          http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_se...asp?id=1461#11

I wonder if the earlier E-P1 doesn't actually support it - only the E-PL1 and above?

          ------------------------------------------------------------

In fact just tried the E-PL1 instructions. When I get to the DISP/PC menu - whats in there is completely different from the E-PL1 instructions so you can go no further.

Surely I can't be the only E-P1 owner trying to use their camera more than on auto?

Ah, sorry - I thought you had an E-PL1.

The E-P1 definitely supports it. In fact I think it's the default mode. Just press the OK button and you should see the Super Control Panel like this:

This is actually from an E-620 but it's basically the same.

You can then move from one mode to the next and then use the adjust wheel to alter the value without having to enter any menus. You can also press OK to do just that if you wish, though.
