Re: EM-1 first reviews are out

Just returned from a Leica Fellowship long week-end in Dover and France, so just enough time to check the reviews and read the stuff sent to me by Olympus.

I really looks good and if C-AF+tr is really as good as the guff says it is, then I shall be joining the queue!

Posted elsewhere on this forum, but I thought it would be nice to collect everything in one place.

There is a thorough review on the Camera Labs site, including a good video with a pre-production example of the EM-1. Link here.

Re: EM-1 first reviews are out

I've pre-ordered mine following a review of all the available info and registered my claim for the free battery grip (worth £199). I missed out last time by being a bit chicken, not this time hopefully (although I see they say that there are only a "Limited number" of the grips on offer )

Got to wait until the end of October now (oh well, at least I should get to play with one on Sept 28th )

Re: EM-1 first reviews are out

Does anybody have any theories on which retailers are likely to get stock quickest? I seem to remember that some were much faster than others when the EM-5 was first released.

Just one more review and one comment right at the end - when he added his metabones adaptor and added a Nikon lens - lost the focus peaking... THF? Focus peaking doesn't work with old manual lenses - what's the point of that? Hopefully something in a pre-production firmware that will be fixed when it's released, or I'll be holding onto my cash.

Focus peaking does of course work with old manual lenses but you need to enable it for such lenses in the settings.

No-one seems to have covered the AF speed with regular 43 lenses in any depth so far... is there still an embargo in place stopping this from being covered?

The manual is available to download http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/...manual/pen.cfm here and looks reassuringly similar to the EM-5 + improvement

Phew! Thanks for clarifying that Ian - just not sure my wallet appreciates it as much

Whilst I really like the new EM1 as the improvements over the EM5 are quite substantial on the whole, I really don't think that my BIF and similar action photography will be improved by a vast amount.

The link above is really very good and positive as it shows by actual video of just what can and cannot be achieved with the new EM1 in an actual shoot.

The shots of teenagers moving around a skatepark in Alberta are still quite hit and miss on C+tr AF mode and the camera still only actually fixes focus on the first shot. The reviewer who is obviously an Oly fan and clearly likes the new EM1, is honest enough to admit that it is not a replacement for a DSLR when it comes to action photography. My pre-order is now on hold!!

Fixes focus on the first shot in high speed sequential, (9/10 FPS), slow it down and it continuously focuses is my understanding of it. Like the E-M5.
