EM1 Firmware update Error message

Hi,
I am trying to update the firmware on my EM1 and I get an error message saying "unable to communicate with camera"

Does anyone know what might be going on?
Camera is connected to Mac with USB cable. I wonder if the cable is faulty as I am also unable to transfer images from SD card to mac with the USB cable!

Any suggestions welcome!

Interestingly I had a similar problem with my USB scanner this morning. I got the "Can't communicate...." message too although I'm using a PC. I was fortunate that a simple reboot cured the issue.
If rebooting doesn't help in your case what software are you using to perform the update?

Have you used the said cable successfully with your camera before?
If so what is the camera's USB function set to? Make sure it's set to "AUTO" in the menu setting "gear cog" page D.

Failing all this try another cable.

Have you ever managed to transfer files or update firmware in the past using the cable or is this the first time you have tried?

After you have connected the camera to the Mac (Camera powered off), then power on do you get the USB menu on the camera's screen (Storage/MTP/Print/Exit)?
If so when you highlight "Storage" and press OK the camera should connect.

If it does not then I would suspect the cable.

I assume you are using the Olympus supplied Software.

Thanks for your reply.

I have used the cable to update firmware before but not really for transferring files. My card reader failed which is why I was trying to use the USB cable.
When I tried to update firmware with the Olympus updater, it looked like all was well and conncecting but at the the end it said unable to communicate with camera.
When I try to import files from tne SD card using the USB cable, firstly the files came up with error messages. Now they don't come up at all, but they are still on the card.

Thanks Steve. Yes,the camera is set to USB function Auto, but I don't have another USB cable. Is it easy to to get hold of another one?

Have you tried rebooting or even better shutting your computer down completely and restarting it. Sometimes the USB function fails and has to be reset.
The USB cable is not a generic one.

Thank you very much for the Amazon link. That's very helpful. I shut down the computer again, tried reconnecting the cable from the camera and it comes up recognised for 2 seconds then disappears. So, I guess this must be a faulty cable.
