  • EM1 with 35-100 f2 lens plus 1.4 converter issue

    Hi,
I have recently tried using the 35-100 f2 plus 1.4 converter plus internal digital converter and MMF3 adapter for EM1.
I am finding that combined with the 1.4 converter it is not focusing as well. Not nearly as sharp as with just the lens and internal digital converter.

    Any comments and advice please??
That whole combination gives me the distance I need equivalent to using the 90 - 250 2.8 but I think the quality is not as good.

    Thanks

I don't think that combination is recommended for any m4/3 camera. When they were first released, using more than one "attachment" between the main lens and the body was found to give unpredictable results. In your case, you're using two "attachments".

Thanks. I had a feeling that might be the case.

I don't think the MMF-3 counts as a "thing" - a 4/3 lens should work fine with or without a teleconverter. The original restriction was on combinations like an extension tube and a converter, or stacked teleconverters.

Sisi - have you tried the 35-100 and EC-14 on a "big" 4/3 body? If you have, do you find it performs better there than on the E-M1? It's not a combo I've ever tried, either on the big E's or the E-M1.

          Thanks John,
I think I did try using the EC14 converter with the E5 quite a while ago but also found it unsatisfactory as I then forgot that I had a converter altogether and then tried it with this present combination above.

Looks as if that lens and converter don't match very well, and if you use the digital teleconverter as well you are magnifying any problems. The 35-100+EC-14 combo is pretty much like three quarters of the 50-200, apart from the 50-200 losing up to half a stop at the longer end, so maybe it's not that great a loss. Unless you don't have a 50-200, of course

Strange, in general people speak highly of the EC-14 and my experience of it has been pretty good. I've used it a lot with the 50-200 and a bit with the 150/2 and both work well. And the 35-100 is a sharp lens. Maybe there is just some strange alchemy that prevents them from playing nicely together.

I have yet to use the T/C with the 35-100 & e-m1 but will endeavour to try the combo some time this coming week and let you know how 'I' get on.

              I have had good results with both the EC14 & EC20 when used with the 90-250 F2.8 & e-m1.

              Kind regards, Simon

I have found that when mounted onto EM-1 and 50-200swd, the EC14 does slow things up considerably. I got a bit frustrated with it at a big air display last month but made the decision to put up with it. I went to Duxford on Saturday and left the EC at home, everything seemed so much quicker without it.

Not sure how long it will remain in my kit bag for.
