    Re: Firmware Update

Yes Brian. Just thought it might save someone here possibly spoiling their setup if using the 100-400mm. I'd like to try it with the 300mm f4 but I'm not going to take the risk until we know more as v1.3 is pretty good anyway. I am encouraged by the improved performance reports with Olympus lenses.

      Re: Firmware Update

If the new update is having an adverse effect when using the Panny 100-400 .... then surely it's about time Olympus got their act together and gave us their version of a long zoom.

At the moment, the lack of an Olympus version is forcing those who want a long zoom to go to Panasonic for such a lens.

        Re: Firmware Update

I did notice that another update is due early next year to make the mk2 compatible with the new 200f2.8, I'm probably dreaming but it would be nice if they got everything sorted in one go (maybe even dual IS and pro capture? )

I just upgraded. Not really tried anything yet except point it around the house. Not noticing any difference at all yet.

This is being discussed on the E-M1 II Facebook page.

Gave my Pany 100-400mm a whirl this morning, having ugraded to V1.4 firmware.

No noticeable difference in performance. Works well still.............

              Re: Firmware Update

Prompted by postings over on DPR, I've been checking out CAF+tracking. With the 40-150 it actually seems to work now! Very snappy autofocus and in half decent light it seems to track the subject far better than I've ever seen tracking work before.

People on DPR are however pointing to poorer CAF with the 100-400, which isn't such good news if you have that lens.

I know that is the general view Martin but my experience is different, which is why CAF + tracking has been my standard setting when using the mk2 + 100-400 for all my water sport action work and most of my birding work so I am one who is disappointed with the change in both focus acquisition and tracking in this mode.

I'm hoping that the effect may be minimal in better light but so far after two days of testing in very poor light it doesn't look promising

Might be the size of the subject. Tried tracking this morning on a couple of jets land at the airport. Tracking did not pick them up on neither 40-150mm nor the Pany 100-400mm. Jets were about a mile away I guess. But playing with flowers in the garden, both seemed to track Ok. Yet to try out flying birds..........

                      Re: Firmware Update

I've just had an update from a couple of other users of the 100-400 on the mk2 post v1.4 which seem more positive when shooting in good light.

"I tried it today on fast moving birds and it is most definitely faster. I was able to track a fast flying duck on a clear dawn sky. The same conditions and shot it failed last week"

"Had my first backyard play with new FW and PL 100-400 and feels if anything a bit more "sticky" (better) for CAF to me. Tracked this pidgeon through trees and houses and got a few sharp ones... much like before."

So I look forward to seeing how this develops for others (we are stuck with miserable, dark skies for the next week or so by the look of it)

Thanks Mark, hmm, I'm seeing it consistently lock on to jets flying at vapour trail height (well, I was before v1.4 ) and birds occupying less than a tenth of the EVF area, as I said, I have no explanation why but after early problems one of the first firmware updates seemed to resolve any issues I was seeing with using CAF or CAF + tracking

Well I just updated and cant see any difference in CAF it's still a bit hit and miss .

                          Re: Firmware Update

It's so difficult to assess this sort of thing objectively that I'm currently fairly skeptical of what has been posted - by well-meaning people who genuinely believe what they've found, of course. Without blind testing it is unreliable, full stop.

So, there are so many variables, especially with CAF, that I recommend waiting before jumping to any conclusions if this is important to you!

I'm off to North Norfolk in a few days for 5 days birding (and landscape shooting), and I had thought about updating one body and leaving the other at v1.3 and choosing one or the other at random to see if I could find a difference, but in the end I just updated both and decided to worry about other things!

On the basis of 20' in the back garden I can confirm that I can find no glaring changes in tracking birds-in-flight or in % images in focus with the 300, plus or minus the 1.4!
                          Regards,
                          Mark

                            Re: Firmware Update

All one can do is record what is seen objectively and accurately, whether or not everyone see the same effect can be down to many variables

Over time shared experiences provide a data set, that's all

For example, I have yet to see many of the problems that others have experienced when using CAF + tracking (which is now my standard setting for the bulk of my work) but that in no way suggests that the experience of others is wrong.

been doing bif today with 100-400 lens on 1.4 update and I think it is better in caf but not much change in saf. I took some magpie in flight shots against a wooded dark background and out of about 10 shots 7 are good, this in not too good light using caf, bbf.there was a jay high up in a tree about 20% covered in branches saf could not pick it up, but could pick the nearest branch, so it is still an annoyance having to adjust or go mf.not tried caf-tr yet.

The 4/3 Rumors website has just said that two sources have confirmed that Olympus will release a new firmware update for the E-M1II on February 28.

One of the sources said that those could be some of the new features:
                                - It adds small focus points
                                - much improved pro capture
                                - improved CAF for video
                                - Image stabilization improved
                                - Video quality improvement

Not long to see now if they're right!
