Well i hope those pics on DP review are of whats to come!

My initial thoughts as posted on 4/3rds on the Panosonic G1 are


I was expecting....well more.. or in this case less, not much smaller or lighter than the E-420..dissapointing after all the "micro talk", and shoe horning anothe 2MP on the sensor cannot be good for noise above ISO 400 but guess not a prob for ex compact users and whats with the DSLR like hump thats not good for slipping into a pocket.

Lets hope Oly can come up with something smaller and better. Sorry for sounding so negative but it just my initial feeling after all the hype.

Very interesting. Bright fast EVF. Fast AF. That's two concerns dealt with. Motion/shutter speed preview! New sensor....

Olympus can add in-body IS, video, a few good lenses, maybe battery grip and it really is starting to look like a viable option.

This is really much better than I was expecting. The biggest problem it'll face is that like the E-3 it's been hyped by people to be something that it was never claimed to be.

I must be honest I've been extremely negative towards m4/3rds but having seen the G-1 I think it shows promise, not suited to as many a Panasonic/Olympus thought perhaps but it may just meet my needs perfectly.

Now I want to hear more

I have been privileged to have have had knowledge of the Panasonic Lumix G1 announced today for three months. This is of course primarily an Olympus site, so I won't dwell on the G1 here, but you can read my illustrated introduction to the G1 over at Four Thirds User if you wish

One assumes that they've done extensive market research before investing in all the tooling and such required to make these new cameras (and lenses), but personally, I'm still far from convinced. However, one has to remember that the people on this forum are almost certainly not their primary target market sector. If they can persuade a major retail chain to plug them extensively, they might just succeed with the people that like/ aspire to "bridge" cameras.

It does look as though they've upped the MP count, which is essential IMHO to compete in that market. It'll be interesting to see how that turns out in terms of high-ISO noise, especially as the same sensor will no doubt be used in the next evolution of the E-series (12MP E4 this winter???? Possibly with more AF points? Assumes, of course that Ogawa Haruo's remarks are not just chaff). Even if it's "iffy" in DSLR terms, it'll still be a lot better than the "bridge" competition.

The key now is going to be the price, and whether it competes on the "feature count". Which? will no doubt pan it as there's no video capture!

I think you hit the nail on the head - Micro Four Thirds is aiming at those who are aspiring to something better than a bridge camera, but don't necessarily want a DSLR because it's big, bulky and, possibly, loud in operation. Some of us here might like an MFT camera but most of us are primarily in to DSLRs, so I'm not expecting everyone here to fall instantly in love with MFT. On the other hand, I do think that the the MFT market could be big.

Hi Ian,

I agree the potential market is hugh for the micro four thirds cameras. Samsung have annouced a simliar camera style based on APS-C sensors.

What would you say are the compelling reasons for a camera like the Oly 420 + pancake over a MFT?

I hope Oly produce a strong roadmap for the E-System at Photokina. Are you planning to publish this on the forums?

I doubt you can say but the rumour of an Oly camera between the 520 and E-3 makes me wonder if it will have the 12 Mpixel sensor. Just guessing!
