  • HELP! Flash recommendations for EPL-3

A colleague of mine (the only other Olympus shooter in the photo club) is looking for a better external flash for her EPL-3.
It has to be relatively affordable (she wishes it for her Birthday) and she really likes the compact size of her PEN and lenses.
    My question:

Which to prefer : FL-300R, small and tilt-able, but only guide number 28 ?
FL-36R quite a bit bigger, but able to tilt and swiwel and
    guide number 36 ?
Any Third-party vendor (Metz for instance) ?

Personally I use the FL-36R on my EP-3 and I find it a great flash for its price, only issue is slightly longer recharge times comapred to my other flash (Metz 48 which is awesome).

    Any help and suggestions appreciated

Stick with the FL-35R. OK it's a bit slow, on full power discharge, but it has 100% compatability and the AUTO Strobe Mode is excellent for distant remote flash.

I'd go the extra mile and get the FL-36R

Just ordered a flash bracket for mine so I can use the FL-36R and VF-2 too.

Thank you very much for your suggestions, this only conforms my own theory.
But how useful is the FL300R ? My colleague prefer the smallest possible solution.

        Another question

DJMC : I am very curious regarding the flash bracket - Until now I have (quite successfully) used the built-in flash to control fl FL36R hanheld when using the VF-2.
How does the bracket work ? and how much did you have to pay for this accessory ?

Thank you very much, seems to be a must have.
            One question though:
Do you use a Flash cable to fire the flash ?
Olympus flash cables are quite expensive but I have read somewhere that Olympus E-systems works just fine with even Canon flash cables.

With my E-PL2, and I'm sure the E-PL3, you do not need a cable when using the FL-36R. The camera's pop-up flash (or add-on flash in your case) provides trigger info to the remote flash.

Once again Thank you very much for this useful hont.
I knew that the built-in flash can control Fl36R and use i frequently holding the flash in my left hand.
But I was just not sure if it worked reliably with the flash placed in this bracket.
I'll order a bracket right away
