What software

I should be buying an E520 in the next week or two, so i'm wondering what software I need / is desirable.......I'm totally new to this photo editing, RAW processing, HDR etc

Just checked what's on the laptop and i have Photoshop 7 and Corel paint shop pro photo XI .... hardly used either of them though, so i guess i'll be dong some tutorials

Are they good enough, or too outdated? and what else should I get (without spending much would be good!!)

Hi Chris,

Have a look at the just released Olympus Viewer 2. It's a free download from the Olympus website and should do everything you need. The only thing it doesn't offer is a clone tool or healing brush for removing dust spots or unwanted objects in your photos, although you shouldn't suffer from dust thanks to the E-520's dust removal feature. You could use Viewer 2 to process your raw files, and if clone tool/healing brush work was required, you could then open the files as tiff or jpeg in Photoshop 7, which does have those features.

I use Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 for most of my editing. It does everything that I need plus more for only a fraction of the cost of CS3/4/5/. If you want something that is free I can reccomend The Gimp

I think you may get away with what you have to start with mate. though as far as I'm aware there isn't raw support in Photoshop 7.

I used Photoshop 7 for awhile and found it did everything i wanted. Not a lot has changed with Photoshop over the years just logo's and layouts and a few extras you properly wouldn't use in a million years.

I can recommend Lightroom which i have found very easy and pleasing to use though just for small changes and updates.

Gimp is also good considering its free. You can even get a raw converter plugin to use with Gimp.

Btw The E520 is a very good camera, i brought mine about this time last year.

Edit. as mentioned above paint shop pro is excellent as well and you can knock it if the President of Russia uses it as well lol

If you can't get hold og the 'Big Boy' (CS4 or now CS5) then Elements has got to be the one to go for IMO
I have never used Lightroom as I have used PS for so long I just can't face using something different. I may not know what I am missing but at least I am happy.
