Re: Autumn Sunset

Lovely shot Keith. I would have been really pleased with this one.

What does WDYT stand for?

Regards

Graydon

Re: Autumn Sunset

Sorry Keith, I was intending to follow my previous post with an actual comment on your picture - but then I took a rather long phone call!

Not a conventional composition, hmmm, I'm not sure what to make of it. It does what we are told it shouldn't - have the horizon roughly centre frame where it splits the image in two. But somehow it doesn't seem to matter here, maybe the rising slope of the horizon fools the eye into thinking it is higher than it really is.

Then there is the sunset immediately drawing the eye to the extreme left edge and out of the picture. But somehow with me that doesn't happen. The dark lines through the stubble seem strong enough to engage my eye and lead it to the tree furthest to the right on the horizon, from where it meanders slowly to that sunset.

There is plenty of rather empty foreground in this wide angle view which should make for a dull picture, lacking in interest. But the light catching that stubble makes it a feature in itself.

The bright sky on the left and dark sky on the right should put the picture out of balance yet the opposite occurs with the field, which provides an effective counter balance. I must say the colours in the sky are lovely.

This shot shouldn't work, but it does. I shouldn't like it, but I do. Was it an intuiative composition, Keith, or did you have to work on it?

You're rather good at landscapes, aren't you?

Re: Autumn Sunset

Thanks John......

Blimey you have really dissected this one up.......GREAT.

"This shot shouldn't work, but it does. I shouldn't like it, but I do. Was it an intuiative composition, Keith, or did you have to work on it?"........YES.....This was happening behind me as I was taking another shot and my 1st instinct was to try and put the sun nearer the middle but as with most things it proved difficult and I tried a few different formats and comps BUT with time and the sun running out fast I got down lower to help bring out the lines in the field. The sun being on the far left in this one came about as there was too much rubbish to the left.
As I normally shoot in either 1st or last light any forward planning is usually restricted to having a few places I think might work but when I get there things change so quickly instict has to take over.I am a relative newcomer to this lark but some of the basics tend to look after themselves, such as lead ins, thirds etc, with the passing of time and experiences.
One thing I am usually guilty of is rushing around too much as I try to maximise the number of different shots I can squeeze out of a session.

Thanks
Keith

Re: Autumn Sunset

OOps, just realised that this is Foto Fair and not Perfection. Stll, the image is good enough that it should be in Perfection!

Re: Autumn Sunset

I think it's only on here that there's 2 different forums that really are the same.....on all the other sites I upload to good critique is given as a norm.

Just putting pics on for people to see is O.K.but not a lot of help to anyone as an exchange of views helps everyone.

I think I would rather have "it's rubbish" than silence.

Thanks Keith

Re: Autumn Sunset

It's a great shot but I think there is too much empty space on the RHS, I keep wanting to "pan" over to the left, personally I think if you had kept the sun and LHS tree anchored and zoomed in a bit until the RHS tree was further over to the right it would balance the composition more.

But a good and interesting shot.

Re: Autumn Sunset

Thanks Paul....

Put a card over the RHS and the tree DOES stop the eye wandering off out of the scene......but I would then loose the lead in of the tractor track.
It's a no win situation.
I will have a look at my files and see what else I got before the sun went.

Thanks everyone for great comments

Re: Autumn Sunset (extra pic added)

I prefer the first comp, the sun is too central and the lines of grass lead you in the wrong direction.

That might satisfy everyone
